Band Slippage.........

Recommended Posts

Hi All,

I was banded on Jan 3rd 2007 and had no problems and was losing weight regularly and very happy untill I had a band slippage at the end of June. I was rebanded within two weeks and am now 10 days post op. My question is, does anyone have any experience of band slippage, know of any links where I can find information regarding this or know exactly what caused slippage????? I did of course speak to my surgeon, he said that as I lost the fat from my stomach the band slipped down to a wider part of my stomach which caused the severe restriction which prevented me from keeping anything down including liquids. Once the band was deflated I was able to eat and drink anything I wanted (and boy did I take advantage :)). I have lost 50lbs to date and since my surgery I have been suffering with heartburn and have been taking meds for it morning and night. I have v. good restriction at the moment even though I have only 3mls in my 8ml band, before the slippage I was up to 5.5mls. I am finding it difficult even with sloppy foods but am not too worried as I know once I lose a couple more pounds the restriction will lessen. I am just a bit worried that this slippage may have more to it than I've been told and would like to speak with anyone who has experienced this. I see my surgeon for a post op visit at the end of this week, I would like to be prepared and have the right questions to ask.

Thanks for listening, hope someone can help me.:)

Check out the section on Lap Band Complications or Life After Lap Band Removal. Some of those folks have gone through the same thing.

Coco,

Sorry to hear that you had so many problems. Who is your surgeon my i ask?

Hi Princesst,

I am Irish and had my band done in Dublin, Ireland. My surgeon is Mr Jerome Manacue (Sp!!) he is a french surgeon and has vast experience doing this operation over many years. I had no problems with the band up untill the slippage, in fact I was just two days back from a week in Italy when the band slipped. I had even lost 2lbs while on holiday. I put on 6lbs in the two weeks between the band slipping and having the repositioning done. I'm not sure whether I got a brand new band or whether the old one was repositioned. I will see Jerome on Sat and I have a few questions to ask him. I don't see this as a huge problem, I see it as a kink in the road to a healthier and slimmer me.:) I am 10days post surgery and have already lost 8lbs. So I think I'm back on track. I was just curious to hear of other people who had band slippage and what they were told was the cause.

Thanks for replying.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
