January banders, let's ring in the new year together!

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone! I'm new here but not new to being obese. I've been overweight since I was a child and I am excited, and a little nervous, to begin this new chapter of my life. My surgery date is 1/22 and my pre-op diet starts 1/8. I've freaked myself out a little after watching too many YouTube videos but I'm still sure I want to do this. Are there any other January banders out there?

Welcome and congratulations on the beginning of your new life. I used the same surgery as you at NYU. I went with Dr. Ren but I've met Dr. Schwack once or twice.

My three year anniversary is next month and not a day goes by that I don't feel so very grateful for the band and my vastly improved quality of life.

Welcome to the January banders. My 3 year Bandiversary is Jan 15th. I am so happy I made the decision to have band surgery. I have never had any problems with mine. I had diabetes , high blood pressure and high cholesterol , I no longer have any of them. This is a wonderful place to ask questions and voice any concerns. We've all been there and done that. Best of luck on your upcoming surgery let us know how you are doing and how we can help.

I didn't realize our surgeries were only a day apart. We're band twins...LOL.

Thank you both! I'm more excited now than nervous, and I will stop watching youtube (for my sanity!). :)

Hello everyone. I'm new her also. I start my pre-op diet tomorrow and my surgery date is 1/8. I'm going bonkers. I was scheduled for a RNY and chickened out and had it changed to a band yesterday. My surgery is for health problems not from obesity. I only have 50 lbs to loose to be at goal weight. But I'm scared to death all the same.

hi everyone! Am due to be banded 25th January :)

Congrats and welcome to the boards. I wish I could give you a crystal ball so you can see how great things will be a year from now. I was banded in 2013 and after several health issues were taken care of, I had a much better 2014 and a terrific 2015. I'm so looking forward to 2016 as my life just keeps getting better and better..

Hello Everyone!

Super excited and nervous at the same time...I am a January bander, too. January 15th. I start my pre-op diet on the 2nd. So happy I found this website. It is so hard to discuss WLS with someone that has no idea what you are talking about or has never been though it. Whoop! :)

Happy New Year to all my banded friends. January 2016 has started and it will be 3 years on the 15th since my life changed for the better. I still have to be aware of what is going in my mouth but overall I am happy with where I am now. My health has improved 100%, the freedom from diabetes, high blood pressure and high cholesterol is wonderful. No medications at my age (69) is an accomplishment. I have decided to due some things in 2016 (not a resolution) just goals. Drinking more Water . I"ve always struggled with that. Eating less carbs and exercise more. May everyone's year be blessed.

I start my liquid diet Friday and I'm so nervous I'm going to be miserable! Any good tips to get me through it?

The best tip I can think of is that you may and likely will be miserable. I was as were so many others. But...it's all worth it in the end.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
