Surgery in a few days, any last minute advice?

Recommended Posts

Hi guys,

I'm Dennis, from NC. I've been lurking around this forum for awhile, just taking it all in and learning. With my surgery in just a few days (the 21st), I felt like I should stop in, introduce myself and say thanks to everyone for all the information and for sharing their experiences, both good and bad. I can't tell you how beneficial it has been. With that said, any last minute pointers before my surgery?

Hi, I just found this site too. Learning from reading the posts. My date is the 31st. Excited but nervous. I am curious how people determine their goal weight? Did your doctor help you choose your goal weight? Good luck to you on your journey.

I was told to have a goal of the heaviest part of the BMI chart that would make me 'normal weight' for my height. Hopefully can push it lower, but we shall see.

Just don't be hard on yourself. Give yourself time to heal and don't jump on the scale the day you get home. Allow yourself to heal and be kind to yourself. There's a bit of an emotional ride when you get home and smell the first meal you can't eat.

My Nut and I discussed what a realistic goal weight would be.

Try making small goals along the way..once you reach that one, move onto the next ;)

Make sure you have all of your food for the first 2 weeks & supplements.

Keep a Protein, fluids, and supplements calender. And when you take any prescriptions especially pain meds. So easy to forget when what needs done once you are home!

I found it handy to keep my Protein shakes on one shelf in my fridge, and I bought 3 of those sports top Water bottles that are 24 oz each. If I could almost finish the 3rd bottle (easy to lose track of sipped amounts), I knew I got my fluids in. Plus could add sugar free flavors once I got sick of plain Water.< /p>

I just had my surgery on 12/17. Good luck with everything ❤️ a few things to remember or know(things I didnt) you are more than likely going to wake up in SERIOUS pain bc of the gas and very nauseous. You may even throw up( I did) you may even think to yourself why did I do this. How can I take it back ( I did) but remember this pain and nausea is short lived. I am already beginning tot feel like myself again. I'm not trying to scare you but I wasn't told any of the bad sides to the surgery so I want to make anyone aware of the possibilities. Don't be afraid to ask for pain meds and anti nausea meds. WALK WALK WALK. Give it a day or 2 after your surgery and you will start to remember why you did and be thankful that you did. Good luck with everything you will do awesome !

Get up out of bed as soon as they will let you, walk as much as possible around the hospital, it will help with the gas pain so much

Hey! Everyone has given you some great information. I will like to add, bring a cami shirt with a built-in bra. As one of the incisions are close to where an underwire bra will lay. The first night is the worse, so like many have already said...walk ASAP. And bring your own robe. Good luck!

I haven't had surgery yet, but some really good advice I've heard was to bring your own pillow with you to the hospital. A couple reasons why is because you have a comfort of home, if you put a different color pillow case on it, you won't forget it, and plus it's good cushion for your belly on your ride home from the hospital. Place it between your body and your seat belt.

Sorry for asking on someone else's post, but your reply caught my attention. You said that you had serious pain, what was hurting? Was it the incisions, or could you feel pain at your stomach pouch? Just curious, this has been one of my questions all along. I am having surgery on Dec 28.My apologies for asking questions on someone else's post, I am pretty new to this forum stuff.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
