I was definitely very grumpy in the first several weeks post-op and my husband had to bear the brunt of it, because he was the one unlucky enough to be around. Between the fatigue, the discomfort, the frustration, and the hormones, it's a wonder he stayed with me! The good news is, it did get a lot better one I was eating more. I do still get very "hangry" if I go more than 3-4 hours without eating. My husband puts up with it, but my mom actually took to carrying around nuts or turkey sticks in her purse whenever we're doing stuff together. She makes me eat something at the first signs of hangriness.

If you value your relationship then get counseling and quick. Many marriages and relationships end after weight loss surgery, and for a variety of reasons.

Fat stores hormones - mostly estrogen, but a bit of the other stuff too... so as you lose fat, those stored hormones get released back into your bloodstream. Meaning you can turn into an angry, weepy mess for quite some time while your body adjusts to the hormone flood.

Try to talk to your partner, apologize for anything you did that was out of line, but ask for some leeway for over-reacting or hormonal issues, and start being more aware of when you are acting crazy and why so you can get it under control.

Leave the room, go take a nap or have a good cry or scream into a pillow rather than taking the mood swings out on your partner.

I'm thinking it may happen to guys as well. I blew up at my brother the other day and have been easily aggravated at work. I am a month into this. The other day my brother said "I liked you better before you had your procedure"..... I'm trying to work on being more stable.. :)

Luckily I got my estrogen from a patch, and I gave up that patch 2 weeks prior to surgery, so I didn't have the hormone dump that most people get. I've heard it happens though.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
