Anyone's first surgery?

Recommended Posts

Haven't got my surgery date set yet as i am still finishing up all the pre-op requirements but this will be my first surgery as well. To be honest, i think i am more nervous about the blood thinner injections the month afterward than the surgery. i hate needles and the thought of having to give them to myself is creepy. sure ill get used to it after a day or two.

Seriously, if I were you I would be more nervous about blood clots (one of the biggest risks of any surgery) than any shots to prevent them.

I didn't have shits (I took a blood thinner orally instead) but from what I hear from those who had the injections, it's a piece of cake.

Do whatever you are asked to do post-io, even if you don't want to or think you can't. Everything you are asked to do is for your benefit and to keep you alive and healthy.

I had to do the shots for 14 days after the surgery. The first time I had to give myself a shot I had a panic attach! (I know, I'm a baby) But--- I did it and each shot got a little easier. Not saying it was the pain of the shot--I think it was just the idea of having to give it to myself. But-- I did it. You will be able to do it too. We have committed to this journey and can do anything to make it happen. Good Luck!

I figure I will get used to them after a day or two! I'm like you, it's the thought of giving them to myself that is scary

I was sleeved a week ago today.

Not sure what it was but I had a calm come over me and I wasn't nervous at all that morning or the few days leading up to surgery day.

One thing I made known to my surgeon & anesthesiologist was that I did not want a mask placed on my face just prior to going under. They were happy to accommodate me & make me sleepy & out through my IV first. The blood thinner shots to the belly, I had two and honestly the needle is so tiny you barely feel it.

Please try not to worry too much about those Heparin shots.

Yup ... I am a lucky girl. Never had any problems that required surgery. And I've never had children. :)

I am stuck in a Catch 22 with my PCP and my surgeon. So I have no idea when my surgery will be.However when I do have it it will be the first one I ever had. I also am scared about being put to sleep and what to expect as far as the pain and how I will get rid of the gas as I can't walk.

Swinging my arms around and bending side to side helped me more with the gas than the walking did.

Thanks for that bit of new info. That is what I like about this site new bits of information to share. I never would have known this other movement would have helped. I just hope I will remember it when the time comes.

My surgery date is Jan 11th and yes, it will be my first.

Ive been a nurse for 8 years, worked in the ICU, now working in L&D and that made me nervous at first. I think I know too much. But now that the date is so close Im just ready to get it over with. I try and put myself in the mindset of a person who is NOT a healthcare worker and just learn the basics of the sleeve.

Just as babies are burped you can enlist someone to burp you.

I did it for my cousin after her surgery & my husband did it for me.

For me it helped to have him firmly pat my back on the left shoulder area and it worked. Also slowly sipping warm Decaf tea helped.

Wow Another wonderful idea. Thanks! I will have to ask my room mate if he will do it for me. My Doctor doesn't allow coffee or tea for 2 months after surgery. I don't know if that would include decaf tea or not. I guess I will be asking during the 4 hour workshop a week before surgery when ever that will be.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
