Moderate to severe reflux

Recommended Posts

My preop UGI shows moderate to severe reflux. Has anyone with reflux still had the sleeve or did you have to have bypass?

I had moderate reflux when I was sleeved. The upper GI series showed that I had a hiatal hernia, which my surgeon could (and did) fix during my sleeve surgery. If my reflux had not been caused by the hernia, my surgeon would have strongly recommended bypass, and I would have followed his recommendation.

Generally, RNY gastric bypass is recommended for individuals with severe acid reflux (GERD). I am 31 months post op from RNY and have not had any severe acid reflux after the surgery. Although I had several episode prior to surgery.

I had severe reflux. The moment I found out RNY would literally cure it and the sleeve could make it worse, I switched to RNY.

I have been off all medications since 30 days post op and have never had a single episode of reflux or even simple heartburn.

RNY is the choice if you don't want to go through another possible revision.

My two cents.....

Thank you. I don't have any symptoms, which frustrates me. I really wanted to have the sleeve. I have an appt with my surgeon Monday and I'm mentally preparing myself that she's going to want to do bypass instead. My BMI is 35.2 now. I'm really afraid of the absorption issues and complications. I'm tempted to not have the revision and just get the band removed.

complications aren't very common, and malabsorption issues are rare if you're diligent about taking your supplements. I went with bypass as well because of GERD. I've had no problems with it all since surgery. It was a good decision.

With a BMI as low as yours, I'd think really hard about RNY...if that's what's been presented to you. You're not even symptomatic, right?

No. I am not symptomatic. In the past year I recall discomfort once and that was after drinking several mimosas that were mostly orange juice on one day during the summer. I am seeing my doctor on Monday and am scheduled for lap band revision to sleeve on Tuesday December 29. I'm praying for no surprises. I reached out to my surgeon after seeing my results and now she wants to see me.

Sleeve here. Never had reflux and boy do I ever. No chance of going back because the surgeon bailed and they apparently have legal agreements so that the other name in town can't do them. The third one won't because they know them, went to work with them, friends with them, etc.

I had mild to moderate reflux daily before the sleeve. Around weeks 3 and 4, I had some mild episodes, but nothing since.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
