SELF PAYERS...please give me your insight

Recommended Posts

I am doing a robotic VSG in CT on 1/11 and it costs $20K which included pre-op and 3 months of Post op. Best money I ever spent on myself. Payment was required to be paid in Full 5 Days prior to surgery.

Do you have a retirement account? Some retirement plans will let you borrow money against them without paying any fees or taxes for early withdrawal. They have very low interest rates and a large portion of the interest goes back to you as return-on-investment. It's something to look into.

I do not have this option :(

BUT... I had been holding off telling my grandmother due to the fact I didn't want her to cry and try to talk me out of it but I told her yesterday and she was very supportive. She also offered to loan me the money from when she sold her house! Now I can just pay her back and save thousands in interest. Whew. I got super lucky there!!!!

That is awesome! It's great that she turned out to be so supportive AND offer up the money! I remember how much I dreaded telling my parents about my decision to have WLS, but then they ended up being all for it and proud of me! I love it when our loved ones surprise us!

I had my surgery on 1/12/13 and have lost 124 pounds. I highly suggest going to Tijuana. I went by myself and I do not speak Spanish and I never felt scared and I was never alone. There are many great surgeons in Tijuana. My only regret is I did not get my sleeve sooner.

That was my exact experience as well. I don't speak Spanish, but everyone I encountered on both of my trips spoke English, so it didn't matter. And I definitely never felt scared or alone. I had excellent care and support throughout.

I am having Gastric Sleeve Surgery on Jan 7th and I scheduled through Medical Tourism Corporation. My concierge is Cyrel and she has been instrumental in this process. I'm have the surgery at the florence Hospital and my surgeon is Mario Camelo Ramos. The reviews are solid. The cost was $4088, with a $100 discount if confirmed with a $250 deposit before Dec 31st. I'm so excited!!!!

So do you pay the $4088 the day of surgery?

Sent from my SM-G530T1 using Tapatalk

No. I paid $250 deposit before 12/31/15 and they discounted by $100. I brought the balance in a cashiers check of $3738.00. I gave it the day of the surgery, 1/7/16. I have to document my experience so I'm writing a documentary. The Healthcare System is superior to thee US in so many ways

I'm also going to Mexico with alighterme. Can't recommend since I haven't had the procedure yet but I've heard great things. They have a closed group on Facebook. Research them yourself. Also YouTube has two people who have used them sleevedmel and thereallisatuttle. Check their videos out. It may be melsleeved. I always forget her YouTube name.

@@SHANA55 - How successful you will be with self pay in Mexico would depend on several factors:

  • Are you able to do your own research esp. on nutrician?
  • Quality of the surgeon and facility. There was a fly-by-night shady operation in TJ for a while. Do your research. But note the facility I went to had a lower rate of infection than most in the US. When you go there you see why...big private rooms, not cluttered with all the stuff we cram in US hospital rooms (that they never sterilize) and they mop three to four times a day.
  • How many risk factors do you have? (Substance abuse, heart et al).
  • Odd note...How much emotional support do you have? There will be many freak out moments for no good reason.
  • Have you dealt with the emotional issues which brought you to this place? Therapy recommended, but this book should be mandantory...http://www.amazon.com/Emotional-First-Aid-Kit-Practical/dp/0976852659/ref=sr_1_13?ie=UTF8&qid=1436729032&sr=8-13&keywords=bariatric+book
I did follow my own advise and it was easy and worth the $4000. Completely changed my life for the good.
Hi OKCpirate, I'm sure you've already said it somewhere on the boards before, but I have a hard time navigating here. If you don't mind me asking please, who did your surgery in Mexico and what hospital/facility did you have surgery in? Thanks

I have recently found out that since Obama care passed alot of insurances cover visits with dieticians 100%. Mine does! So that's a plus side to going to Mexico is that you can still find a NUT here that can help you

Hi - I've been trying to work with my insurance company for a month and I found out that I have to go through six months of medically supervised diet, etc. I have to go through hoops and it's not 100% coverage. I decided to go with self pay. To be honest I just can't wait anymore. I am so ready to be a sleever!!!! I'm looking in to Surgical Specialists of Louisiana. I have an appointment on Tuesday. I'm curious to find out about post surgery complication insurance. I've also read a few things on here about insurance picking up some costs if a hernia is found. Should I ask my surgeon if he can look for a hernia? Thanks in advance for any help. I can't tell you how much comfort this site has brought me!

@ AnnainMS... Hi there. The surgeon's office should give you information on coverage of specific things after surgery. I was a self-pay patient and certain things are covered up to 6 months and my wife and I decided to pay for an additional 6 months through BLIS and it was only $60.

@@AnnainMS I found a doc in dallas that is willing to bill my insurance for the hernia and then just have me pay out of pocket for the sleeve itself. It's going to cost me about $2500 over my max out of pocket. All in all it ends up being less than going to Mexico. And my insurance covers my NUT appointments 100%. I do them via video confrence.

I fly into dallas in 10 days to get my sleeve!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
