When I went to my pre-op appointment, I was speaking with the surgeon and he mentioned that the sleeve "only has the horsepower to help you lose between 100-150lbs", and mentioned that, due to my size (470lbs) I would likely have to get revision surgery to RNY, but for now he agreed that the sleeve would be best for me.

Personally, I agree that the sleeve is the best option for me, but I am worried that he is right about eventually needing revision surgery. I only want to go through this once!

I have previously posted asking about experiences of people who were 400+ lbs who chose the sleeve even though it doesn't have as much firepower behind it as the RNY.

I'm making this post to see if anyone else has heard this claim before or if they were able to surpass the 150-170lb mark.

Don't get me wrong, I will be doing all I can to help my sleeve through diet and exercise, but I just worry that it will all be for nothing. (Not that 150lbs isn't nothing, but I have at least 120 extra after that to lose!!)

Thank you in advance :)

I started at approx 550 pounds...

I'm now nearly ten months out and have lost over 200 pounds...

I'm absolutely ecstatic with that but still have another hundred or so to go...

It's a process...

And it's hard...

But don't forget - all the numbers you get from your doc or surgeon are an average.

To get an average, all of the numbers - big, small, in-between - are added together and then divided...

So if 150 pound is the average, for every person that loses 75lb there's one who loses 225...

For every person who loses 100lb there's someone who loses 200...

It's a numbers game..

Aim for average..

Achieve average...

Then kick average's arse..

Go on - have a crack!!

I dare you to beat the 'average'!!

I never heard of the horsepower thinking. When I went to see the surgeon I was 352 and he tried to talk me into the Gastric bypass because of my weight but I told him NO! I once was 497 and lost 145 on my own and felt that with the 6 months supervised diet and the sleeve I would be able to lose down to 155. This past month my 6th visit when I asked the Dr what was the expected weight loss monthly. He felt he couldn't give me monthly but gave me a 6th month weight loss of 95 pounds. He felt I would get to 200 and then the rest would be skin removal. When I stated that would be 45 pounds he stated yea that is the amount of excess skin I predict you will have. I still do not have a surgery date so we shall see what happens by next Christmas.

If you feel comfortable with the sleeve don't let the Dr talk you out of it. I think those of use who have BMI's over 50 have to be more strict and stick to the Protein Vegetables and keep out the other foods far longer than the thinner ones. I am so dedicated to making this work that I am willing to do just that and will have to change my mind as I am a person who enjoys variety in everything including food.

200 in 10 months is awesome. Keep going strong. Hopefully you took pictures. I am going to be taking some more pictures tomorrow I hope since I lost 35 with the 6th months supervised diet.

That's the spirit!!

Go nuts!!!

And as creepy as this sounds...

I'll be watching...

@@ssflbelle

I'm far too attractive to take pics...

If I post them, women swoon and send me private messages and stuff...

Then men get all huffy and start victimising me in the Men's Room (not to be confused with the mensroom!!)...

So I just tend to lay low and keep to myself...

It's a tough cross to bear but I do what I can...

You should take pics tho!!! :D

Edit - Please understand that the entire statement to ssflbelle is a work of fiction.

I'm not too attractive for pics...

Women do not swoon and leave Private Messages...

Men do not get huffy and victimise me in the Men's Room..

I've added this disclaimer because I know there are a few here who lack the ability to distinguish between somebody talking themselves up and somebody having a little joke to lighten their day.

As you were...

I was told the same. My weight in September was 433. The surgeon told me that with the sleeve I'd only lose so much weight and if I wanted later I could get the rny to lose more. If u go on Instagram you will see ppl who were u their 400's and have lost tons of weight. I wouldn't want to go through another surgery either :/ I'll be having mine some within the next 4-6 weeks.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
