My suggestion would be in order to find someone local to the Richmond area, contact your health insurance company and find one who is in network and uses a center of excellence.

I am in NoVA and there are several bariatric practices in the area; Fair Oaks and Sentara have stellar bariatric programs. Bluepoint Medical, Virginia Bariatric.

Again, I would (and did) start with your health insurance company. Then I put my feelers out to people I knew who had surgery and asked about their experiences.

I totally understand. Is there a program near you where you can go for an informational session? Inova Fair Oaks and Sentara in Lakeridge offers them on a monthly basis. Sentara would probably be closer as it's like a 2 hour drive from Richmond. You can check their website for when the meetings.

Hope this helps.

There is a bariatric GI at VCU. Don't they have a program up there?

I would suggest calling every program on your insurance that is within a driveable range for you. Make them earn your money. I would ask how they deal with bad problems, references for when things gone wrong, how they deal with them.

Just wanna say hi fellow Virginians! There aren't any Bariatric surgeons close by here in southwest VA so my surgery is in TN.

If your still looking, I would recommend Dr. Anthony Terracina in Newport News VA. I could go on for hours telling you how awesome he and his staff are or tell you he has done 1000+ gastric sleeve surgeries alone not to mention all the other optiins, but the best way for you to see is to make an appointment for a seminar and just go. You will see that the 45 drive will be the best time you have ever spent on you! I am almost 9 months post op and am speaking from my personal experience and those of every single other patient I have ever encountered at his practice. Good luck to you.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
