No pre-op diet?

Recommended Posts

A lot of posts that I have read talk about pre-op diets. My doctor has said nothing about any kind of special diet that I should be following in the weeks leading up to my January 12th RNY. My next appointment isn't until January 7th. Do some doctors just not require a special diet ahead of time?

I didn't have a pre op diet. Just had to have a clear liquid day - the day before surgery. And nothing at all after 10pm the night before.

you're right - not all surgeons require it. Consider yourself lucky!

I didn't have one prior to my rny in Nov either and when he didn't give me one, I asked him why. He said that it has shown not to be that effective at shrinking the liver or making the surgery any easier and all it did was put undue stress on the patients. He also said that the general consensus is that the liquid diet is complete useless unless you had a 600lb patient or something and that would be just to help them get their weight to a lower start to prevent complications associated with that extra weight. He said that he believes the majority of surgeons will be dropping the liquid pre op diet over the next couple of years.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
