Having gastric bypass reversed

Recommended Posts

I have the sleeve, but a friend of mine has the gastric bypass. She told me she chose the gastric bypass Bc her dr told her if she doesn't like it she can have it reversed. Is that true??? My dr told me sleeve and bypass were permanent and non-reversible. Has anyone else been told they could have it reversed if they don't like it?

Well..... I have HEARD of people that had to have it reversed for very life threatening reasons.

Not just because they "didn't like it"

Both are supposed to be permanent.

But it could be done. (and by a extra extra special bariatric surgeon! Ha!)

I'm sure there would be even more and way higher risk of complication when attempting to put everything back to the way they were.

My guess anyways.

I've also been told the bypass is technically reversible, but it's a very complicated surgery and they only do it for really serious medical reasons - not because people don't like it.

It is reversible but only in a situation that would warrant it being reversed, not just "I don't like it".

yes techincally the bypass can be reversed but only in very bad cases and only when all other things and avanues have been tried my surgeon has done over 1000 surgeries and has never had to reverse a bypass. she does however have to do a lot of revisons from band to bypass so she doesnt really offer that as an option anymore

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
