Are you on a PPI for stomach acid? I was prescribed one by my surgeon immediately post-op, but I have read that many people confuse excess stomach acid for hunger if they aren't on a PPI.

some people have issues with that and like the Op said the prevacid or Prilosec will help that. I was lucky so far to not have that issue.

This may sound weird but I went to Sonic and bought a bag of their pellet ice. I would eat a bowl of ice whenever I felt hungry. I think the act of actually chewing made me feel like I was eating. Popsicles were also good during that time.

Agreed that it is probably stomach acid. If you feel the need to chew ice or sf popsicles are a good option. I also found that my sleeve makes more noise when digesting foods now. The part of the stomach that grinds up your food is now gone so noises will be more common, they don't necessarily mean you are hungry. Good luck!

Are you drinking enough liquids? Sounds silly but a lot of people mistake thirst for hunger. I agree with the acid too, that happened to me.

I had the same issue and it ended up being acid. Even though I took my zantac twice a day. I found when I really felt hungry I would eat a popsicle and drink Water at the same time. Made me feel fuller.

Prevacid didn't work on my stomach. My Dr put me on nexium and still had to increase it twice. I take 40 mg in the morning and 20mg at night. Really thought I was hungry and now must remind myself to eat. Talk to your Dr about increasing medication or changing medication. I know the feeling of thinking you are hungry, but it's really stomach acid.

I am 6 days post op and all of a sudden I feel like the stomach is growling all day long. I am on Clear liquids and Protein shakes till the 23rd and that seems like a lifetime away. Anyone have any suggestions as to make the grumbling stop?

I know exactly how you feel. I had my surgery 8 days ago and I feel like I am hungry also, even though I am sure that it is not the case. I have done some of the suggestions above to help with this. I cannot start soft foods until the 23rd either. Hang in there and know that you are not alone... You can do it !!

it stops in time. I'm 2 weeks post op and during my first week my stomach would make the loudest gurgling sounds after I would have any liquids or broth. now that I'm in my second week I no longer hear those loud stomach sounds. If you have prevacid continue to take them. I was given an acid reducer for surgery too but haven't taken it since the stomach sounds stopped. hang in there.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
