christinamejia 1 Posted December 14, 2015 So day 1 of RNY. I'm home now and experiencing lots of pain. Not sure what's going on inside but lots of growling, bloated, pain, feels full, and I'm only drinking 1oz every hour.. any suggestions?
miiasan 370 Posted December 14, 2015 keep sipping your liquids and walk as much as you can. I am sure they sent you home with instructions (and hopefully pain meds) By day 3 I was off my pain meds and walking every hour or two for 5 minutes. They gave me little medicine cups that held 1 oz fluids and I believe I drank 5 or 6 of them an hour. On day 2 it was just broth or Water - day three they added 1 oz Protein per hour - then I progressed from there. If you were not given instructions call your office or NUT. Seems like I had 3 or 4 people give me materials (NUT, pre-op class, discharge nurse, and the nurse from my doctor's office) - Congrats on your surgery - the first week or so is rough because of the gas pains and not being able to get in much Protein and Water. You just have to keep working at it slowly and know that everything will work out.
thbrown223 214 Posted December 14, 2015 Yes, my surgeon only discharged me from the hospital when I showed him I was able to drink 1 oz every 15 mins. The goal is to have 4 oz every hour, which would total 48 oz of you're up for 12 hours. I literally sipped all day long. I used a timer to help remind me. Also walk in your home. It helps with the gas pain. I also ate Jello and broth. I mainly drank. I also had to drink 2 oz of Protein shake 3x a day in the first couple of days. I believe I ended the week with 4 oz 3x a day of Protein shakes. These all count as liquids. But as you know you have to get your fluids in. I've had to get fluids twice because I was mildly dehydrated.
christinamejia 1 Posted December 14, 2015 Which Protein Shakes did you drink? Not sure if I should drink the ispoure or the pure Protein. Waiting for my doctor's office to open @9am
psvzum 81 Posted December 16, 2015 Are you taking your pain meds? This really helped me get by the first few days.
Susan66 128 Posted December 16, 2015 I'm 5 days post op and have been using Syntrax Nectar Protein Drink for my Protein Drinks. Today I did have Isopure grape flavored drink. The pain gets better each day & the gas pains in my shoulder were gone day 4. I had a hernia repair with my VSG.
Klolojadie 46 Posted December 17, 2015 @@christinamejia I just had surgery on Monday 12/14 and I'm feeling tons of pain. My incisions have bruised very badly and my entire abdomen is killing me. I truly feel like half of my pain is probably from gas and for the first two days I couldn't breathe fully and standing up was very hard. Walking has helped tons. I wasn't expecting this level of pain.

Leanmachine 5 Posted December 17, 2015 I had surgery on 11/6. Trust me it gets better. I was very miserable for the first week. It gradually gets better. Just take small sips and don't obsess about the Protein. I know it's hard not to. But just remember it's all about allowing your body to heal right now. Congrats!! Klolojadie 46 Posted December 18, 2015 @@christinamejia Yes I did have the RNY, it is getting better slow but sure. In those first few days it was so bad I couldn't stop thinking something must be wrong. I couldn't imagine the pain and now I know it was mostly from gas, now that the gas is gone It's so much better. ZERO hunger as well, I just can't get over that part, I love it
