Constant bad taste in my mouth!

Recommended Posts

Hello,

I had surgery this year November 18th. Almost a month, but I have this taste in my mouth that makes me want to gag all the time. My surgery was a little tricky and there were complications. I ended up staying in the hospital for a week and my surgery lasted 6.5 hours. Because of this I am on a very strict diet and just last week they allowed me to go to pureed foods. Is it the food, the shakes, or the actual DS surgery, what is going on with my mouth!!! I want to brush every minute. However, another side affect is that nothing tastes right. I have to literally force my self to eat anything.

Has this happened to anyone?

Just wondering!

Sandra

I had the sleeve and not the DS, but I'm almost positive it's ketosis. Google it and I think you'll agree. The breath and taste from it is positively horrible! I had it too the first month after surgery.

After I wrote this post I googled it and yes I agree. I appreciate your response. It's comforting to know I am not loosing my mind!!! I can't eat, drink, let alone eat those horrible chewable Multivitamins. I'm so done with the Vitamins I'm going to start the regular pills next week. It's the only way I'm guaranteed to take them.

Which Multivitamins are you taking? I take the Bariatric Advantage, and they taste pretty good actually - but they smell terrible! Good luck. I have the same thing going on.

Someone beat me to ketosis. I've done Atkins many times, and bad breath from ketosis can be one of its downsides. A lot of people I know who eat low carb swear by altoids to alleviate the symptom.

Thank you everyone!

I am using the Bariatric Advantage Multivitamins. But everything for me tastes bad, even coffee. I put in a call to the doc today to see what are my options. In the meantime, I'm going to get some altoids!!!

Sleever here...everything tasted awful first few months post op. It was a great opportunity to change my relationship with food. I ate food like taking necessary medications, not for pleasure but for health.

That changed of course and I enjoy food again, but I viewed that unpleasant time as a blessing.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
