Not eating or drinking almost 4 weeks post op

Recommended Posts

I had surgery Nov 17. I had a difficult time with pain management. Buy I am having some issues with getting Fluid down and eating. Everything hurts to go down. Has anybody had or are having this problem. I'm not meeting any of my goals and I'm not loosing any weight and I k ow it's because I'm not meeting the Protein goal everyday. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

I would contact your surgeons office. At this point it should not hurt to get your fluids in.

Dehydration can cause severe nausea and make everything worse. The other thing could be a stricture which is holding you back and can make you very ill if you cannot even get liquids down.

Can you get any liquids down and if you do what happens?

After RNY gastric bypass surgery, the three most important requirements are meeting the Protein, Fluid and Vitamin daily requirements. food is secondary. Since you seem to be having problems with at least two of these (fluids and protein). This inability needs to be dealt with. Four weeks is too long, contact your surgeon's office. As Djmohr stated, the cause may be due to a stricture.

Like i said before. It hurts or maybe the word is uncomfortable to swallow. But I will be scheduling an appt with the surgeon this week. I also had an appt with the surgical dietician and she said to worry about getting fluids and not so much to worry about Protein right now. I'm getting Vitamins in as well.

Uncomfortable to swallow. After surgery, I found that my tastebuds changed dramatically. I couldn't even drink the Water in the hospital because it tasted extremely chlorinated. When I got home, I still found it difficult to drink Water. It wasn't painful. It just tasted bad. Eventually I found that I could tolerate Crystal Light, so that is what I used. Later I found that tea was good and also hot cocoa was good in the winter. But you can only drink the cocoa that has "no sugar added". Some people found that Soup would go down easier.

Your total Fluid daily requirement can be met by the sum of the fluids you drink, the liquid in the Protein shakes and the liquids in the meals (such as soup). Even the water you swallow taking your Vitamins count towards you total.

I have never been a fan of Gatorade but I finally bought some last night. Best decision I made. It tasted well and it went down easy. So I think I found me something to drink. Thanks for all the advice.

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

The 14th was my day. I am home and recovery is going pretty smooth. They even let me walk out of the hospital. Picture of me in recovery curtesy of my boyfriend lol.
