vegeterian/pescetarian recipes, nutrition information how to record if none is provided and how much seafood is OK?

Recommended Posts

Greetings All,

My question has three parts:

#1 - My husband is pescetarian (meaning that he eats fish but not chicken, beef, pork...) and I am a full on carnivore. My struggle is finding recipes that we can both eat. I don't mind making things that don't include meat but find that these recipes may not have as much Protein and are often high in carbs. Does anyone have any suggestions where I might find some great recipes that are pescetarian friendly, high in Protein and low carb? BTW - I am not a fan of spending a lot of time cooking - so quick, easy but delish recipes would be best. And...any recipes that may allow me to add meat but hubby can eat the same dish without the meat?

#2 - On that same track, how much fish is OK to consume in a week? I have heard and read so many different things but if anyone has some concrete info. that would be great! I would hate to think I am doing something good by eating fish but consuming too much of the mercury.

#3 - Nutrition information - I know that we can use myfitnesspal to find recipe nutrition information by adding all the ingredients... but - uhgggg - if you all don't have nutrition information for a specific recipe how do you record it? What if you eat something out and the nutrition information isn't available?

Thanks!

Try TVP (textured vegetable protein) -- it's fake meat and has lots of Protein. Comes in crumbled styles (similar to ground beef) and is great in stews, sauces, etc.

Just a quick response since I am not pescatarian or vegetarian. There are vegetarians on this site who can help you. You might get more responses if you post in the food and Nutrition Forum. I THINK there is a vegetarians subforum.

As to how much fish is safe to eat I think it varies depending on the fish and where it comes from. The Environmental Defense Fund has some good information on their website. Also, I live in Kentucky and our Department of Fish and Wildlife has info on their website about locally caught fish. If you eat local fish you might want to see if your state has something similar.

Best of luck.

Hello, friendly neighborhood vegetarian here. TVP is a good sub, lentils are not bad. I really like using the Explore Asian bean based pastas. The net carbs end up coming out fairly low.You can then make a veg ragu or meat sauce. Easy and tasty. Ricotta bakes are good. Basically just the filling from stuffed shelled baked in ramekins topped with cheese and sauce. Not sure how low you consider low carb. I honestly don't worry about low carb. If it's plant based ( from Beans or veg) it doesn't seem to effect my weight loss at all. I do avoid "white carbs" such as breads, crackers, traditional pastas and white rice. On the rare occasions I do eat rice I eat brown or black.

I think if you make a basic dish for him you can make any lean Protein for yourself and then just add that to your meal. I don't use a lot of recipes, I just kind of wing it in the kitchen. For healthy veg recipes I would try pinterest and then adapt.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
