Question about swallowing

Recommended Posts

I just got home from the hospital after being sleeved on the 8th. Everything went well and I will on on fluids for 2 weeks, than puree for a week and then the transition. My issue is that when I swallow something, weither it is hot, cold or room temp., I get a really weird feeling when the liquid hits the stomach. It's not a pleasant one and was wondering if this is normal and if anyone else has experienced it?

Feels good to be on the post side now!

I had mine on 11/19 and remember it was a week until I felt 'normal' as far as swallowing anything. I wouldn't say it was pain, but uncomfortable, and something that definitely concerned me. When I brought it up with my surgeon, he said it was a normal part of the process of healing and should pass. It did.

Mine was the 9th, I get waves of discomfort, which are worse when I swallow. I was told to persevere, especially with the Water, it's important to stay hydrated. Not managed to have a Protein shake yet, but I did get down about a teaspoon of Protein pudding earlier. I used a tiny spoon!

Did you have a hernia repair as well?

No but the feeling does seem to be getting better.

I've been feeling a lot better while walking, just around the house so far, but I may go outside tomorrow.

I managed 16oz of Water today, with flavouring, plus about 30ml of Protein pudding.

I had a similar experience (sleeved on 12/2/15) where the Water seemed to hit the top of my stomach, stop, and then slowly trickle in. Meanwhile, I would feel discomfort, like something was stuck or like I needed to burp. Often tapping or pressing on my sternum would seem to help relieve the feeling or getting the air out. It got better each day, and to my best guess (and the nurse's), it's probably because of the swelling post surgery- at first liquid doesn't flow in really easily since the opening to the stomach is a little swollen, but as the swelling comes down, it becomes easier. Hope that long explanation helps!

Me, too. Sleeved 12/8, and the swallowing is painful, but less each day. They said avoid the straws because you take in more air, but I get better relief from that swallow pain when I DO take in more air. I think because the larger air bubble creates an escape faster. I gotta burp with each sip either way.

Day 1& 2 were a bit weird when trying to swallow but now at post op day #4 I'm pretty much swallowing with no issues. One question I have for you all is, are you taking baby sips or regular sips? In support group meetings I attended prior to surgery they stressed taking baby sips. I think I take sips a little more than a baby sip. I can't imagine getting the 64oz of liquids in each day taking baby sips. I would be sipping 24/7.

I'm doing a lot better now also. As far as sips, my sips are a little bit more than a baby sip but no where as near what I used to do! Good luck and get well soon!

I am only 8 days postop and had this issue while I was still in the hospital. When I spoke to my Doctor, she stated that it could be a muscle spasm in the area where the esophagus meets the top of the new tummy. They gave me a anti spasmatic medication and it stopped.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Am feeling this right now. My surgery date is 4/1. Sign the consent tomorrow. I feel like I overloaded myself with too much info, too many opinions. Got to the point where I was wondering if I should do this. Then I thought of my reasons for taking this step and that settled my nerves. Still get moments of doubt but am striving forward. Am just going to follow my book from the surgeon. Joined this because I was told by my dietician that I should do this for support
