Gained 5 lbs overnight

Recommended Posts

Day 18. On pureed foods since last Wednesday. Still trying to find what I can eat/tolerate. Got close to 60 grams Protein Saturday and Sunday and drank all my Water. Surprise , surprise I woke up got on the scale and gained 5 lbs overnight from Saturday to Sunday and today still up that 5 lbs. I gained 7 lbs post op and took 10 days for that to go then I dropped 10 lbs and now gain 5. Down a net 5 lbs. Kind of disappointed when I see people down 20 lbs and the weight is flying off. I know I shouldn't compare but after 3 solid weeks of liquids and gagging down Protein shakes and then having a hard time finding anything besides fat free refried Beans that my new stomach will tolerate it's kind of hard. I have upped my exercise (water walking with weights to 1 hour a day 6 days a week.)

It happens. It might be Water weight (are you nearing your period?) or just your body being contrary. Just keep hitting your water/protein goals and doing moderate exercise and make sure you're not eating too little (can cause stalls or gains like this sometimes).

Are you cleared for that kind of exercise? That seems intensive so soon. Since you exercize so much you may not be getting enough calories to keep you out of starvation mode.

It has to be Water weight. One pound equals over 3,000 calories and I strongly doubt that you ate over 15,000 calories the night before. Also, if you weighed yourself at a different time of the day than usual that could explain it.

I weighed again this morning and still up 5 lbs. I know I can't have really gained that weight but it is soooo frustrating. I have in the last two years leading to surgery tried juicing, going almost vegetarian, exercised and my body seems to stall every time. I mean I gave up bread, Pasta, sugar, booze and still can't seem to lose weight. That is why I finally broke down and got the surgery. The doctor cleared me for the pool and I told the nutritionist and she seems fine with everything I am doing. I was putting cheese on my refried Beans so I'm going to cut that out and try to get in a little more Water and see if that helps. I just had a very reasonable goal weight for Christmas and if this keeps up I won't make it. Feeling a little bummed out.

Please stay off the scale. This is a different process than what we were all taught pre-op.

You are still recovering from major surgery and need time to heal. You are swollen and full of fluids.

Your primary focus post-op is getting enough nutrition to heal and to keep your metabolism functioning.

Follow your program.

Focus on getting in all of your Protein and fluids.

Take your Vitamins and supplements as directed.

Exercise. Moderately until you can get enough nutrition and are cleared for more strenuous exercise.

Weigh less often.

We do not lose weight at a constant rate. We all experience periodic stalls and most of us have our first one about three weeks after surgery.

If you are unclear about your program or what you should be eating at each stage, then give your NUT a call.

Embrace the Stall!

@Yaberhooee - Water walking isn't that intense. Depending on how easy your recovery is you can return to working out fairly quickly.

@A New KK - put the scale away. It's gonna make you crazy. Hit Protein & Fluid goals. Once your body adjust to all the new changes the weight will come off. Sometimes even a good BM and the scale changes. Put the scale away for a month. You will be pleasantly surprised when you do step back on

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

That sounds awesome. I'll have to check that out thanks!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
