Just wondering how everyone decides on their goal weight. I just changed my goal weight from 160 to 145. I based it on a reaching a bmi of 24.9, so I will no longer be considered obese/overweight. Hopefully will reach it, just can't wait to be in onederland, 11lbs to go. Thanks for any input

My goal weight is 145. That would put my BMI at 23. I just believe this is a good healthy weight for me and my body type. I cant wait till I get there. Good luck to you.

When I first started, my goal was about 185, which was a reasonable expectation based on surgeon's averages. Then, as I started losing, and the weight was just falling off and I saw others achieve a normal BMI, I changed it to 145. Then, as time went on and the weight stopped coming off, no matter what I did, I changed it to 155. I have never actually hit that number, and at three years out it's a lofty goal in the back of my mind.

Now my real goal is to maintain my loss. The number on the scale still matters to me, but less than it used to. I am a smallish, normal sized woman, and thanks to plastics, I don't look like I've ever been overweight. That's success beyond my wildest dreams.

That's a long answer to say you may have to be flexible. ;)

I set my goal at 165 because that is considered a healthy weight (at the higher end) for someone my height. My primary care physician said he thinks my goal should be 175 and my surgeon never set a goal for me. Right now my goal is to get under 200lbs :D and I will see how far I can take it and actively maintain a "goal" weight. It could change up or down, it just depends on me and my body.

Technically, your goal weight can be any weight that you deem is acceptable for you. However, in practice one's goal weight should be the weight that puts one under the 25 BMI category for what is considered a normal weight. I know I've seen several people on this board make posts about being in Onderland and that they've reached goal and then you check their BMI and they are still overweight, but to each their own, I guess.

My surgeon said his goal for me was to "lose as much weight as fast as I can". My NUT gave me a more realistic goal of 1-2 lbs per week until my BMI is 24 or below. I'm only 5'0 so that makes my goal weight 127 and below.

Your goal should be to lose 60-70% of your excess weight. On the 600 lb show, their goal weight is 250, which for them is amazing and life changing and losing greater than 50% of their total weight. For many of us a "healthy" weight under BMI of 25 is indeed the ideal but that does not mean that should be everyone's goal. If your BMI is 50 and your goal is to bring it down to 30 then good for you as that is a laudable goal. If you lose 60-70% of your excess weight then you have done better than average and should be considered a success.

Let me edit. I did not mean to tell folks what their actual goal calculation should be. I just was trying to be supportive of those who cannot get down to BMI of less than 25. My goal certainly is to get down to a BMI of less than 25. My doctors goal is to lose 60-70% of excess weight. I would like to lose 100% of excess weight. I have lost 60 lbs now in less than 4 months, but definitely have at least another 60 to go.

My goal is to get to 149. I believe I based that on a healthy bmi range of 24. (From what I can remember)

Also because it is out of the 150's

I want anywhere from 135-145. I don't want to be in the 150's.

I'm 5'6. Started at over 260. Now I'm 189! Over halfway there!

I also picked my goal based on bmi. And I use to weight 132 so I know what that looks like.

I'm just ready to be out of the "obese" category! 4 more pounds and I'm "overweight!!!"

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
