Thank you so much!! They said I can drink up until midnight. And I love the no-frills advice on what to pack! I have only been under anesthesia once and did not tolerate it well...but that was nearly 20 years ago...so hopefully I will be alert and updating soon after!!????

Hi There!

I am new to the boards and wanted to wish you luck and follow your progress. My VSG is scheduled for 1/6/16 so I'm going to be a month behind you. As for the anesthesia, just had a thyroidectomy in October and am not good with tolerating the drugs either. They gave me a patch behind the ear which helped a lot. I didn't vomit after which I ordinarily would : ) . Good advice from the other poster about not bringing too much. They will move you around and it could just get lost. I've been told to bring my CPAP machine so that'll be fun to lug around from room to room.

Good luck and let us know how it goes!

First of all Congratulations for tomorrow and wishing you a speedy recovery :) :)

For one night:

Loose clothes to go home in.

Something to read (such as magazines, which you can just pick up and put down in between walking, sipping, sleeping, walking sipping)

Gas-x strips

Soap, toothpaste and toothbrush.

Nightwear/underwear

I stayed 3 nights and 4 days and so in addition I took and found helpful:

Kindle

Face wipes

Lip Balm

Phone and charger

Shampoo and body wash

3 x nightwear

I spent most of the time in between the walking etc either in bed sleeping or watching tv/reading or being checked over by the health professionals, especially in the first day. My husband brought a pillow to put over my tummy so the seat belt didn't dig in for the drive home. Otherwise the hospital provided everything else I wanted.

Best of luck with your surgery!

I took/used:

Clean underwear to wear home (I just wore the same clothes I arrived in home)

A firm pillow for the ride home

Chapstick

Biotene

Phone charger. I gave my mom charge of my phone so I wouldn't call/text while loopy. I also have her a list of folks who wanted to know when I was out of surgery and she texted them an update with my phone.

A heating pad. I had some shoulder pain from the gas and was also really cold, so the heating pad helped.

If you don't tolerate anesthesia well or even if its a mild reaction ask for the anti-nausea patch they put behind your ear that you can wear for 3 days its amazeballs

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
