How long until I can go upstairs?

Recommended Posts

I know I am going to want my big, comfortable bed after surgery but it is upstairs. Will I be able to make my way up the stairs 2 days after surgery? I can maneuver stairs just fine at my current weight so the only concern would be the pain and energy level.

Yup. I was going up and down stairs the minute I got home.

I live in a tri-level and was all over the place as soon as I got home. The only difference was that I wasn't carry the laundry basket from upstairs to the lowest level. My hubby-man took care of that for a while.

Walking up/down stairs is allowed right after surgery

(You could play it to your advantage if you want others to bring you something from another level in your home :))

Be prepared to not be able to sleep in your bed right away. I was most comfortable sleeping in my recliner the first week after I got home. Laying flat was the only time that I was uncomfortable. I used extra pillows in TJ to prop me up in the hotel bed, but the recliner was initially more comfortable. I graduated to the pillow fort for another few days in bed before I was able to comfortably lay down. Much of this could be that I'm a stomach sleeper and I had to psych myself out when sleeping on my back.

Me too! I came home the day after surgery and it took me awhile to do the stairs, but I did them.

You probably won't be able to sleep in your bed at first anyway. For the frist week I had to sleep in a recliner at a 45 degree angle. Most people find that laying flat puts too much pressure on their incisions

It varies person to person. I was able to go upstairs and sleep in my bed from day 1. The first few nights I propped up on extra pillows, but by day 3 I was back to normal.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
