Gethealthy2016 17 Posted December 7, 2015 Well had a successful appointment with the NUT, told >10 grams of Protein at each meal and snack. Fat and sugar must be <10 grams. Color me confused here, but almost every single fruit I look up has way more than 10 grams sugar. While it is natural sugar, perhaps the under 10 is for processed food? For example, apples, blackberries, blueberries and watermelon would be off limits? Can that be accurate? I thought about calling the Nut tomorrow but perhaps this is just a silly question and fruit is off limits?
BLERDgirl 6,417 Posted December 7, 2015 Nope it's for fruit. Natural sugar is still sugar. If you are eating Protein then veg, then fruit, you won't have much room for fruit. I found that a small portion was more than enough. Oranges and berries were my favs. According to MFP: ½ a med. apple is 9gms ½ a banana is 10gms ½ a navel orange is 6gms ¼ cup of watermelon is 2gms ¼ cup of strawberries is 2gms ½ a peach is 6gms. So you see there is more than enough room to have fruit in limited amounts.
Bufflehead 6,358 Posted December 7, 2015 I didn't eat fruit (other than avocados) for a few months after surgery -- I was focused on Protein, and the carbs were just too high for my plan. Not eating fruit didn't hurt me! I was eventually able to add it back in. Keep in mind that you will be eating very small portions of whatever you are eating. 25 grams of blueberries (a very reasonable amount for a sleever to add to some yogurt) has 2.5 grams of sugar. Gethealthy2016 17 Posted December 7, 2015 Got it thank you! Saved me an embarrassing question for the Nut! I've never eaten this much Protein and spent hours at the store trying to figure out the "math". Since I was following weight watchers before this I stocked up on apples, blueberries, blackberries, a small watermelon and clementines. Then I got home and found so much sugar in each item-but I'll have my seven year old eat it and maybe I'll split some with her.
Sophie74656 1,572 Posted December 7, 2015 I would ask your nut anyway I eat fruit all the time as a snack

Rinse, and dry on paper towels then freeze. fruit is great to add to smoothies. Just separate them into bariatric serving size portions. Everything I listed will freeze well except apples and watermelon. I was adding fruit to my Protein drinks from week 1. I also like have a small amount of fruit with plain greek yogurt as a snack. If I add a scoop of vanilla Protein powder I'll have it for Breakfast.
Proud2BMe 1,016 Posted December 7, 2015 I would avoid fruit altogether. Too much sugar and you can get all the Vitamins you need from non-starchy veggies. Every now and then is okay. If you are going to eat fruit stick to fruit with high Water content like melons.
maggie409 765 Posted December 7, 2015 When I have fruit I have 1/3 cup of strawberries and 1/8 cup of blueberries. I don't eat bananas because it is a bad combination of sugar and fat. I am six months out and started having my small servings around 3 months. Also, on a different note, my NUT originally said to wait for 3 months on fruits with small seeds like strawberries and blackberries as the seeds can get stuck in your staple line
_Kate_ 2,224 Posted December 7, 2015 I steer clear of fruits but some every now and again won't harm.

I add some raspberries, blueberries or blackberries to my yogurt every so often. So yummy! And I get my fruit fix
Inner Surfer Girl 12,015 Posted December 8, 2015 Ask your NUT, but another way to get some fruit is to infuse it in Water. For example, you can put some watermelon chunks in a pitcher of water. You can use fruit, fresh herbs, and even cucumbers to make flavored water.< /p>
