Every doc has different rules. I've heard many people on this forum say their doc says six months, a year... Some say never. Mine said six weeks.

Just be aware that you will get DRUNK off of much less. Your stomach size apparently helps with the processing/absorption of alcohol, so one drink might mean you'll be done.

My dr. said 6 months but I had some in 2 months and was fine.

My doctor didn't mention it, but I had a glass of wine this week (I'm almost 4 weeks post op) and was fine. Having said that, I got halfway through said glass of wine and felt really tipsy, so decided to let that glass be spaced out over about two hours :)

Update 2 (ish) weeks later: as we've come into the holiday period, I've been pushing it a bit I think. We had the work Christmas do (2 glasses), the next day a friend's farewell (2 glasses) and then the day after I went to a wedding and had three glasses of wine, one sparkling (over like 5 hours) and I've had the worst 'hungry stomach' I've ever had for two days. I think it's acid (maybe) but seems like that's what's upset it. I was being well behaved otherwise.

So, lesson no 2 learned the hard way- limit the liquor!!

Also I'm very well versed in my nutrition, I know they're empty calories, etc etc but it was a choice!! :)

I was drinking quite often and it slows your weight loss and makes my stomach hurt. I've been super strict on my diet (sans alcohol) and have still lost a lot of weight but it's better to avoid the booze - sorry to say.

For the rest of you - no lectures, please. I've reformed.

I am having my sleeve done on 9th February and my daughter is getting married on 8th April. Do you think I can toast the bride and groom with champagne 8 weeks after my sleeve? Or should I stick to Water?

Also the food will I be able to eat more solid food or do I ask for mushed up food.. I really do not want to draw attention to myself. Would love to hear your opinions

McCraven: My NUT told me to wait a year. Her reasons were:

1) Most of us sleevers have a fatty liver. As we are losing weight rapidly our liver is working hard. Add alcohol to that, and our liver has to work harder.

2) alcohol can inflame the stomach

3) liquid calories and could effect your weight loss and the rate of weight loss.

Dietbelle: I wouldn't think a teeny tiny sip would would hurt, but I would leave it at just aTeeny sip for the toast. Champagne has the dreaded carbonation and of course the alcohol. A whole glass may not feel good on your tummy. As far as food, each surgeon seems to be a little different. I am allowed to eat solid foods at 6 weeks. He instructed me not to eat red meat for about 6 months but eat what I want with the rule of measured portions, small bites, chew till it dissolves, Protein first and if there is room, the eat some veg. Breads, cakes, etc should be avoided.

That's great advice plus common sense I just don't want to spoil my daughters wedding by being ill but I also want to enjoy the wedding to. I know it's not about the food and wine but it tends to be a big part of it at a wedding! lol..

I certainly don't want to hurt my liver anymore than I already have..

Had my first (and only?) nutritionist consult today. She said wait at least two months but she really discourages it in general especially for women. She said, and I found this a little rude, "you'll lose weight, socialize more, but get really drunk off less because your stomach won't be used to it, and end up pregnant!"

Kind of a dark train of thought, no?

I am a bit of an oenophile so I will probably be pretty eager to have a beautiful glass of wine around that 2 month mark.

I graduated with my Master's degree last weekend and I celebrated with a small glass of red wine. I had my surgery on 12/4 so I was actually only a week out. Now, don't get me wrong; I sipped on that glass for the better part of 3 hours but eventually I drank it.

My doctor said 6 weeks, he seems to be a bit more lenient than most I've seen mentioned on here but I'm pretty positive he didn't mean I can go out and get hammered lol

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
