The preop diet is more about shrinking your liver in prep for surgery to make things easier, also to prepare your body for rapid weight loss. Its hard, Probably harder than post op. Hang in there, follow your plan, you'll be fine.

I lost 15 pounds or so on my 2 week diet.

yes the pre op diet was much harder. I was trying to train myself to eat slowly and eat smaller portions but I was still hungry so it was very hard. But post op I didn't have that hunger so it was easier

I was 294 when I started the process and after a 2 week liquid diet I lost 18lbs. My doctor didn't really require me to lose anything.

If you gained weight then you didn't follow the pre-op diet correctly and thus did not shrink your liver.

Log everything you ingest. If you followed it to a "T" then you will lose weight and shrink your liver. I lost 25 lbs in 2 weeks on the pre-op diet.

Most pre-op diets are the same:

Week 1

Water, sugar free tea - as much as you want

broth - as much as you want

sugar free Jello - as much as you want

sugar free popsicles - as much as you want

Protein shake - About 2 a day, Breakfast and lunch

dinner is leafy greens and lean meat like chicken (not fried and no breading)

Week 2

Protein Shake - 3 a day, Breakfast, lunch and dinner

broth - as much as you want

sugar free Jello - as much as you want

sugar free popsicles - as much as you want

water/sugar free tea - as much as you want

If what you have been eating does not resemble the above then you aren't doing it correctly and need to speak to your doctor.

Thanks im not in phase just yet my doc did not require me to lose weight. Ive gain weight but not yet in the pre op diet

Okay, I suggest that people who have doctors who don't require it to ask their doctors if they can do it anyway. It gives you a boost in losing weight and it will boost your self esteem as well.

Actually it is possible for a woman who is in menopause or post menopause to not lose any or much at all during a 2 week liquid pre op diet.

Omg! Just got call yesterday that insurance finally approved lap band to sleeve revision! I'm scheduled 12/15 which is less than 2 weeks. Starting my pre-op diet now & freaking out that I've got so much to do with Christmas coming & so little time.

insurances have all different requirements...some doctors have programs you must follow. Some insurances/doctors have nothing to do before surgery other than the 2 week pre-op liquid diet..some don't even require that.

My insurance required a 6 months supervised diet. (My surgeon required 7 months) I lost 8lbs. More importantly they educated me and that will carry a whole lot further.

My 2 week pre-op liquid phase is about 1000 cal a day. I imagine I should lose some..hopefully a lot. How much you lose will be determined on what kind of liquid diet you are on.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
