Cannot get any protein shakes down!

Recommended Posts

I am 4 days post op and for the most part am feeling well. But I cannot tolerate any type of Protein shake, Protein powder 'hidden' in things and I'm still on liquids only. I know Protein is one of the most important parts of healing, but I can't do it! Any ideas?

The first week after surgery I was restricted to Clear Liquids only. They weren't concerned about me getting much Protein during that week. I can't stand Protein shakes so I relied heavily on GENEPRO mixed into my foods.

There are A LOT of Protein options for shakes. Which have you tried? Premier Protein Ready to drink are good. Precision Engineered whey Protein Isolate in both chocolate and vanilla are good. I personally don't like Isopure or Synthrax nectar but lots of people like those. How about just plain milk? You have to find something you can drink as it will be important for the first 6 weeks or so.

Try the clear drinks instead. Isopure make premixed ones, Syntrax nectar can be made with Water. I used ProSource NoCarb the first 2 weeks post op. It was great thinned with Water or added to herbal teas. Also look for protein rich beverages. Kefir ( a yogurt drink), cream of chicken, beef, etc... thinned with broth, etc... Milk of choice: cow, hemp, almond have the most protein.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
