Burping/belching post-op?

Recommended Posts

I just had VSG surgery on Monday (4 days ago). I was told to expect burping and to be passing gas while in the hospital.

However, it seems that I'm burping even MORE now that I'm home. I'm on a liquid diet, with a target of 40 grams of Protein daily. But, am burping almost every 10-15 minutes.

Have other experience this? I just am curious if it's 'normal' or something I need to contact my surgeon about.

I tend to burp when I drink or eat too quickly. You are still getting rid of the gas as well. I would call this normal. Are you drinking with a straw? This can introduce gas into your stomach and should be avoided. If you have Gas X strips, take them.

Thanks for the quick response! My surgeon specifically said no drinking from a straw. I have been taking 'baby sips' but will try to take smaller ones and hope it helps. Thanks!!!

Gas happens. It either comes out one end of the other. You will sound like a small frog for a while. All perfectly natural. Just wait until you develop your "I'm full" trigger. I do a single hiccup that sounds somewhere between a hiccup and a burp.

@@Yaberhoo @@ddaisie00 - I would also hiccup post-op those first few weeks when I was approaching "full". I still hiccup/burp but not like those first few weeks :D

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
