How soon after surgery...

Recommended Posts

My vsg is set for Dec 8th. My husband wants me to go out of town with him on the 14th. I know everyone is different as far as recovery, but any opinions on if that is too soon?

Six days, huh? Well, at six days out, I was on purees, and still totally exhausted. If it is a business trip and you can hang back at your hotel room to pamper yourself, it might be do-able. If there is any activity involved, it's gonna be rough going.

You should be okay but just know that you won't have the energy to exert yourself. You may still feel dizzy or faint. But you shouldn't be in any physical pain. Just take it slow.

I had my surgery in Mexico, so I was out of town day 1! Of course, I was still in the clinic then and I was staying at a hotel that accommodates dozens of bariatric patients daily over the next couple of days. But on day 3 I stayed in a hotel on the US side of the border and day 4 I flew home. So travel was clearly possible. The trick will be preparation. You will need to have all the things with you that make the early days possible. Powdered Protein, meds, personal comfort items.... As long as you go prepared, I don't see any reason you can't make it happen.

I was pretty wiped 6 days out. If you're just going to relax, that's fine. But if there is any sort of agenda to follow, be cautious.

I have had quite a journey the last 17 days since my gb. First everything was wonderful. Sent home after three and a half days. Nauseous, a bad rash but overall feeling good. I was out on Friday by Saturday I had a low grade fever. Early Monday my incision began to leak the most foul thing I have ever smelled. I had an infection where they go through the the bowel. Admitted back to the hospital for three days and then back again three days later.

My husband was brave an packed the wound that was over three inches deep and three inches wide.

The nausea got so awful that I started retching Saturday night.

Ten and half hours in the ER on Sunday. They found I had a tennis ball size infection on my right ab.

It has been nightmarish and bizarre. I am home for the third time after spending five days in the ICU.

I hope it gets better from here.

Well. I wouldn't because it so soon after and you should rest. And God forbid you have any complications. I was in the hospital 4 days just with a normal surgery. It's major surgery.

Some people bounce back faster than others. I would just play it by ear if I were you. If it's mellow and you can rest I'll bet you'll be up for it

I went back to work 4 days after surgery! Everyone is different just take it easy and listen to your body. I am a dental hygienist so there was a lot of moving and positions that were uncomfortable while working on a patient but other than that everything went pretty smoothly!

I think if it's just a resting trip you would be ok. Just know that you will be exhausted, probably emotional, and you will need to take most of your food with you. I went away for work half way across the country 3 weeks after surgery and it was a challenge but doable. Good luck!

I went back to work full time on day 7 post op. There is no way to predict if you will have a super easy recovery... but it seems like tiredness is the biggest issue by the end of that first week.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
