Post op counseling visit

Recommended Posts

I know most of us have went to the pre op psych visit. I am going on 6 months post op and thinking it may be good idea to go back for a post op psych visit. Nothing major just to address the mental changes that I feel are taking place. Plus my husband is a month away from having surgery so may be good to not only go for me but also visits for both of us.

Has anyone gone back to post op visits?

I started therapy with a therapist who specializes in eating disorders around 8 months post op. I'm now over 2 years post op and I go every week. It has made all the difference for me in being successful on this journey. I cannot recommend it highly enough. :-)

My pre-op counselor referred me to an eating disorder therapist. I've been seeing her for about a month now, and I think she's helped a lot. I know I have food issues. I always--always--fail at exactly the same weight so I think something's going on there. This is major surgery and a lot of monetary outlay, so I want to do everything possible to ensure my success.

Now, I said all that just to say heck yeah, I think you're smart for seeking counseling. Besides whatever personal food-related issues you may have, you will likely have other emotional issues to face because of the rapid changes in you're experiencing.

Thanks everyone for feedback! I have been open with everyone in my life about my surgery and knew it would change things but it has been such drastic weight loss. I want myself, and my husband and I as team to be successful long term. Maybe two much tmi but I want us to connect again like we did before we gained the weight, and became ashamed by our weight which affected our relationship.

Yep. I never stopped. I saw my therapist quite a lot pre-op (like every week for months) and then post-op also every week for a few months and have now switched to every 2 weeks. She suggests that before too long, we will switch to once per month and ideally continue to at least 2 years post-op. It will help keep me in check and get ahead of any slippery slopes. I have found that therapy has been the best tool I have (maybe even better than the pouch!)

That's fantastic! I shared how important I felt post op counseling is just as much as the pre op visit last night in my surgeon's bariatric support group last night!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
