What to bring day of surgery!?!

Recommended Posts

What did you all bring with you to the hospital?

I'm having my surgery locally done and have a few things in mind on what to bring but don't want to forget anything.

Any tips would be helpful.

The only things I used were my phone, glasses, and toothbrush/paste. I brought other things like my robe and slippers but did not need them cause they made me wear slipper socks and you can't get the robe over the IV lines. Take as little as possible to keep it simple.

  • I brought lots of stuff I did not use. I really loved having my own pajama bottoms, slippers, and my own super soft robe. The nurses helped me get it on with the IV line, and it made me happy and warm.

Besides the obvious (jammies, robe, slippers even if they insist on nonslip socks, and toiletries) I plan to take my phone and my kindle.

I brought lip balm, a brush, my phone, and an extra long charger. That's it. I wore comfy clothes in and wore the same clothes home.

I way overpacked, but that's just me. The things I had that made the most difference were:

1.Moisturizing mouthwash (biotene)

2.Travel size pillow- to brace my stomach with while walking and the ride home

I brought baby wipes, Chapstick, my own slipper socks with grips on the bottom cause the ones from the hospital just don't cut it, my phone and charger, a kindle, my own pillow, gas x strips, dry Shampoo cause my hair gets icky fast, loose pajama pants, and my toothbrush

I packed very light and only brought bare minimum. My hospital provided toiletries and I lived 30 mins away. I brought my toothbrush, iPhone, iPad, charger, underwear and my glasses.

Thank you all so much!!

I don't know why but I never thought about bringing Chapstick or mouth wash which are great ideas! The pillow is as well... Makes a lot of sense!

Thank you all for your responses. Definitely added a lot of these to my list.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
