Any OR staff with tips for hydration?

Recommended Posts

Hello all,

I'm a nursing student, and I'm getting sleeved over winter break (12/18). Next semester I have an internship in the OR, and I am planning on working in the OR once I graduate. I am wondering how folks in the OR get their fluids in, since you can't really be sipping Water throughout surgery. Any hints or tips would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks so much!

I work in the OR and it's hard! Any little break I get (whether scrubbing or circing) I run out and try to sip at least 8 oz! It is a challenge though--I try to drink a majority in the am before work and at my breaks and lunch then sip all the way home! Good luck! I absolutely LOVE the OR!

Thanks for your input! I figured that I'd have to basically try to get my fluids in before and after a shift, but I'll try to sip when I get a break. I'll ask my preceptor where I can stash a water bottle for quick access. I am so excited to be in the OR!

I also work in the OR and it is HARD. Some days are better than others. Between cases I take the longer way and go thru the break room to check my next patient. Then take the long way back and sip more. Using quick feet so that the long route isn't noticed. It is hard tho, especially working 12hr shifts and especially on the days where I have an all day case and don't get out of the room except to break. But you can do it, best wishes on your future as an OR nurse :)

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
