Proper Meal size at 3 weeks

Recommended Posts

How much good should I be eating at 3 weeks out?

I'm not sure at what to shoot for.

I ate a small piece of grilled catfish and half of a boiled egg and couldn't finish it. Almost half of it left.

And why does no one ever tell you these things?

I'm pre-op, and got packets upon packets of information about what to expect, do, and eat each week and then monthly through month three. Do you have any paperwork you can refer to? If not, I'd try calling either your nutritionist or your doctors office for some clarification.

Your nutritionist should have both told you these things and given you information in writing. Call your program.

Hi - sorry you feel unprepared. I can help you - I checked back to my food journals. At three weeks post surgery I was onto soft foods at this point. Amount - I was eating about 1/4 cup of food or 2 oz if I was weighing out my food. This was usually 3/4 of a scrambled egg, 2 oz of tuna (or 1 1/2 oz tuna and 1/2 oz of avocado) or 1/4 of Soup (but I only ate the contents - not the broth). Drank broth first then eat the food part later (after waiting about 15 minutes). If I was eating yogurt, I could never finish the cup container. I would usually do 1/3 - 1/2 at a time of yogurt.

When I was eating right after surgery - you want to make sure you eat or drink - NEVER At the same time. Does not feel right.

this is also when you need to learn what "full" feels like. .

Not all surgeons have the same program. My program after surgery was 2 weeks of liquids only, pureed consistency foods for the next 4 weeks, then on to a full diet. I just started the full diet yesterday and so far eat very little (about 1 ounce of lean meat, one string cheese stick). I still eat yogurt and make my Protein Shakes, but the amount of solid food I eat remains small. Most people have said it takes a while (sometimes many months) for the stomach to be ready to handle much more than that.

I would definitely check with your surgeon and/or nutritionist.

My program says 1/3 cup of food at each meal.

Most of a scrambled egg. Half or so of a container of yogurt.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
