RNY + hiatal hernia repair = harder recovery?

Recommended Posts

My surgeon found a large hiatal hernia during my endoscopy so he wants to repair that during my RNY surgery. Will that mean my recovery will be much harder? Can anyone share what may make it harder or what part may be more difficult? Thank you!

I had a hiatal hernia repaired at the same time as my RNY and I didn't have any problems with recovery. I took very little pain meds in the hospital because they made me so sleepy and only took them at night for about 2 days once I was home. I was so excited to be free of the reflux and gagging on my saliva at night; first time in over 2 decades.

Thank you @@sharkgirl! That gives me a lot of hope! I know everyone is different but I'm hoping my recovery is like yours! ;) I'm SOOOOO excited to be free of reflux too! How are you doing now?

I am doing really good. My weight loss is slow but it's more than would have lost on my own and my clothes are getting bigger. Not having the reflux has been amazing. I didn't realize how much it had impacted my life until it went away. I became the go to person for Zantac and I feel bad now because I don't carry it since I don't need it. Lot of luck to you for your surgery. It truly changes your life in so many ways.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
