Hello all,

Best of luck to everyone. I'm post-op gastric sleeve and pre-op gastric bypass.

When I did my gastric sleeve, I was back to work in two weeks. This time, I want to make sure I not only have enough time immediately after surgery, but in the first 6 mo - 1 yr post-op to really focus on my recovery and weight loss.

Now I'm in school full-time and working part-time (volunteer hours at a really amazing place), which is very demanding. Next semester is my last semester of school, so it's the critical time to build up my resume. If I continue with the amazing work on my resume, it will be easier for me to get a job later, but I'm worried about having enough time to workout, sleep, attend support groups, etc.

I'm considering talking to the organization and explaining I can't work there (even though I've already committed to it), but also worried about having a work gap on my resume during the most critical time to build it up.

I have always put work/school ahead of health, which has gotten me to morbid obesity. This is my second surgery, so I can't mess it up and have to work double hard to lose the weight. I'm just having trouble deciding whether I should stay at the job or not. Any helpful suggestions?

Thanks,

H

You're nearly done with school. Put your heart and soul into it. When that's all done, focus all of your heart and soul on your bypass. It's not an emergency surgery, but a lifestyle change. Make that change when you can accommodate it.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
