Hospital items to take with you.

Recommended Posts

I'm having my sleeve on December 18, I'll be traveling to Mexico for the procedure. Does anyone have a list made of items to take with you? I have read take gas x, loose clothes, and bioptic spray to keep your throat moist and lastly Chapstick. Anything I'm missing please advise. Thank you

Gas X STRIPS, at least 3 boxes. You cannot buy the strips in Mexico so make sure to bring plenty. I went to Mexico last month for my surgery and went through at least 2 boxes. Extension cord so you can plug in your electronics as the plug ins may not be in good locations (you probably don't need an adapter depending on where you go). Hibclens and gold Dial soap for showering and keeping the incisions clean. Extra tape and gauze. Chapstick is a good idea, Loose clothing is a must. The days I stayed in the hospital I just kept the gown on, but you will need pajama pants and loose shirts. EXTRA UNDERWEAR! I can't stress this enough. Never trust a fart.

Those were the things I used the most.

Bring a book or two...if you are lucky enough to wake up quickly not be nauseous, you will want something to do. I get that there's a TV, but that got boring and when you're wired up, it is hard to occupy yourself meaningfully. Also, leave all step-tracking devices at home if you use them...the few steps you miss are not worth losing it for!

I will be in Mexico in early January. It was also suggested to bring a small pillow for between tummy and seat belt. As for the tv....I have heard it is mostly Hispanic programing. Makes sense but I don't know enough Spanish to enjoy it. I will be taking a cheap tablet.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
