Elevated BUN and creatinine

Recommended Posts

I am at the stage of waiting for approval . I am diabetic and my blood levels are slightly elevated due to diabetes . This surgery will literally save my life. But in my mind I am so worried they may not do my bypass .What do you think ? I really need hope and prayers !!

I had both elevated Bun and terrible creatinine levels pre surgery. I was told that I had stage 3 chronic kidney disease. It is the reason I made the decision to have bypass. In fact it was my nephrologist who made the recommendation to me to move forward.

I was told it would not be long before I would need kidney dialysis.

I left his office and immediately took the on line course that evening and went to my first class the next day.

At 1 month post op, both my BUN and creatinine had moved to a normal range. Now my Bun continues to be slightly elevated but that is coming from my high Protein diet now.

I just have to stay at the minimum Protein for my height. The damage to my kidneys was permanent but I have clearly stopped it from progressing.

I had no problem getting approved at all. My paperwork got faxed in to the insurance company after following all the requirements and I had an answer by that afternoon and was scheduled for surgery 3 weeks later.

Of course it took 9 months to get through all the requirements but it was well worth it's!

Good luck to you!

By the way, I also was a type 2 diabetic, had high blood pressure, high cholesterol and sleep apnea as well as severe Gerd.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
