24 days and can barely sit or stand

Recommended Posts

My info:

24 days since surgery

On all my Vitamins, regularly

Try to meet my daily requirements of Protein and fluids (close with 10)

Try to walk at least once a day (on days I can stand)

Weight from 217, to today 190.

My issue(s):

Still bedridden

Difficult to sit up or stand, much less walk

Light headed, heart pounds

Cramping in calves, biceps, and today lower right stomach (not gas, muscle)

Terribly nauseous, but have not thrown up.

Doctor says this is normal, but I would like to be able to sit or stand by now. Thankful not to have a desk job or I would be fired pretty soon.

Wow, that sounds terrible! It sure doesn't sound "normal" compared to what most people have posted, but I'm pre-op so I don't have any personal experience to share.

I hope you get some helpful responses soon. Hang in there!

are you drinking at least 60 ounces of fluids and trying to get in 60 grams of Protein? Those are so important. That being said, I got my energy back in pretty much full force around 4 weeks out. I pray that yours will return really soon!

I am so sorry you are experiencing difficulties. Is the problem actually sitting or standing or is it the getting up and down to sit or stand? I know when I first get out of bed in the morning I still have trouble getting up because of stiffness and soreness, but after I actually get moving I feel much better.

I am forcing the liquids and Protein within 10 points if not completely meeting my daily requirements. Even to the point of adding to my nausea. Ugh!

On the next post, I always steady myself when getting up, but that's not it. Sitting or standing is the part that is impossible. Within a minute or two I have to lie down from light headedness and I am winded.

Light headed east might be dehydration, Vitamin deficiency, and/or blood pressure. What does your surgeon suggest? Have you had a follow-up recently? Have you seen your PCP? I saw both my PCP and sleep doctors within about a month post-op to check meds, CPAP pressure, etc.

This does not sound normal. Did you have this problem before surgery? Does the amount that you weigh impede you from standing for long or walking? Did you have open or laparoscopic surgery?

It can take weeks to recover and get your energy back(took me about 8 weeks) everyone is different but your symptoms seem odd.

Oh do you take a PPI? I am still taking one a day(just over 12 weeks out) and some days I feel slightly nauseous but not enough to vomit.

I'm calling my pcp tomorrow and check in with her, but I am not able to actually get to her because there's no way I could walk to her office. My weight is not the issue for sitting, standing or walking, and does not restrict me from movement. It is the feeling of light headed ness and heart racing. I did not have this before my surgery, but have felt it since day one of surgery. I even asked to stay one more night in the hospital because of this feeling, that has now not subsided for over 3 weeks. My surgeon says it has nothing to do with the surgery. I makeup everyday to stay hydrated since that seems like the most logical answer. My urine is light in color. Getting up and going to the bathroom totally exhausts and winds me. Between this and nausea, I am beyond myself.

Thank you.

Surgeon and nut said to go to ER, so I did. Hands and feet were going numb. All blood worked checked out except dde, and they did an X-ray for a blood clot in lung. All clear. They sent me home saying they did not know what it is, but it is not life threatening. To come back if it continues. I love that, come back if it continues! I couldn't walk out because I was still having the same issues. Ugh and bigger ugh!

I am so sorry to hear you are still experiencing difficulties. Is your lightheaded was and dizziness like vertigo by any chance? Were you given an anti nausea/motion sickness patch in the hospital? I know I wore one for several days after I got home from the hospital. Was that brought up as a possibility at all during the ER visit?

I was given one for after surgery, but at ER they were more interested in life threatening situations vs my issues. The said since I did not have a clot, I should be okay and to follow up with surgeon. However, the surgeon says it is not the surgical part that is the issue. I feel as though everyone is stove-piped and not looking beyond their scope of expertise. Tomorrow I go to PCM and am keeping my finger's crossed for some our of "lane" thinking to help me.

How are you today Gingerbred?

Any better? Did your PCM figure things out?

I am still bedridden, nauseous, and cramping in my muscles. My PCM did get some blood tests, but haven't heard anything abut them, yet. I've gone back to a liquid diet to see if that helps. Every day I tell myself that today will be different, but no changes, yet.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
