When are the "typical" stalls?

Recommended Posts

Can someone tell me the time frames after surgery that sleevers typically stall?

I am 4 months post op (as of today), and am down a total of 76lbs including preop diet (53lbs post op). I have been stuck at 211 for the last 3.5 weeks or so. I am so frustrated!! I did manage to get it to budge 1.4lbs this past week, but I don't feel like I should be "done" weigh weight loss yet, especially because my restriction is still good.

I am wondering if maybe this is just a "typical" stall point....if so, are there more in the future that I should be aware of?

I don't know of typical stall points but your doing great and weight loss will slow down to 1-2 pounds a week after a while if your Still losing its not really a stall. Just change stuff up a bit if need be. Up your Protein lower protein change exercise make sure your getting your Water and Vitamins

@@LivingLight you and I have similar stats. I've been stalled for a month. Just can't lock in below 200. It is so frustrating. What's even more frustrating is when folks say I'm doing so great, don't fret...stalls happen. When it lasts this long, I FRET! I've tried adding Protein, upping calories lowering calories, upping exercise, lowering exercise, and I am bouncing back and forth between 201 and 195. It just won't stick at 195 and drop further. I am frustrated as heck.

You've lost a lot of weight in a short amount of time. Sometimes the body just needs a break.

Sometimes when we stall it's a good time to look at our Protein, Fluid, and caloric intake and make adjustments. I know when I used to stall (a lot) it was always because I just wasn't eating enough for how much I was excersising, so I would increase calories and protien by 100-200 calories or so. I would also 'shock' my system by increasing starchy white carbs for a day or so to get weight loss moving again. Most of the time, that worked for me. Sometimes, my body just needed to rest and I had to ride it out. But if you want to feel proactive, try my suggestions :)

Most everyone stalls at three weeks post-op. After that, I don't know if there is any specific pattern.

I have "heard" you will probably stall when you change food phases.

I have "heard" you will probably stall when you get to a weight that you have spent a long time at in the past.

I just know that stalls are a normal, natural, and necessary part of the process, and that if you plan to lose a significant amount of weight you are going to stall along the way.

Stalls happen anytime, anyplace and last for any length of time. Other than the infamous 3 week stall I don't think there is a pattern. And, BTW, a loss of 1.4 pounds is not a stall. The fact that you are measuring tenths of a pound suggests to me up you are too obsessed with the numbers. Relax, enjoy the journey, count your NSV's, explore some new recipe ideas and stay off scale for awhile. I guarantee you will keep losing if you are eating on plan.

@@Inner Surfer Girl it's so hard to embrace it I hate them so!!!

You are just driving yourself crazy for no reason...

Hey, here's a theory....maybe hairloss is the result of everyone stressing over stalls and not losing "fast enough", not the actual surgery!

I buy that...anxiety = hair loss. Makes sense to me.

If it makes you feel better, I got stuck on 211 too! It was my first stall! I thought my scale was mocking me! I'm down 67 lbs since my surgery in July...my stall was at 3 months.

I feel like I stall at weights where I hung out for a while. Just a hunch.

Thanks for the input everyone.

I maybe wasn't too clear....I HAD been stuck at 211 for like 3.5-4 weeks....I RECENTLY managed to have it drop like 1.4lbs. As for measuring in tenths of a pound, my scale measures in 10ths of a pound, so I speak in 10ths of a pound. If someone asks me how much I have lost, I don't tell them I have lost "76.4lbs", I actually tell them "about 75lbs", but the scale didn't move 1lbs, and it didn't move 2lbs, it moved 1.4lbs, so that's what I say.

I absolutely Celebrate the things I have accomplished that are not related to the scale. I do it often. I jog with my best friend, I wear 3 inch heels, I look at clothes, and shock the daylights out of myself when they fit, heck just today I bought a pair of snowshoes (I have never showshoed before, nor has my best friend, but we have decided we will have an absolute blast doing it, so we both jumped in with both feet....pun intended).

I set a goal to be under 200lbs by Christmas, and it's very frustrating to have to fight so hard to get there, when it's so soon after my surgery.

Honestly, lately I am struggling to get and stay on plan also. My brain goes to "it's pointless" mode. I know it's not, but I am battling the same thinking that got me overweight in the first place. I need to just sit down and have a real conversation with myself about my goals and my needs at this point I think. And try to figure out what's "normal" to be eating....calorie wise and quanitity wise (as in oz of meat, or cups of food in general), in a meal.

I get you. That is one major reason I don't set goals related to the numbers on the scale. I have no control over the numbers on the scale. If I were trying to control them, then I am opening myself up to old disordered eating and dieting behaviors (restricting calories and bingeing after thinking "it's pointless", as you so aptly described).

I learned from my awesome surgeon and NUT to focus on what I CAN control: my Protein, fluids, Vitamins, and (reasonable) exercise. It sounds counterintuitive, but the best thing I can do for weight loss is to optimize my nutrition (not minimize my calories or other "dieting" strategies). Those actually got me to the place of needing surgery on the first place.

I also don't answer the question about how much I have lost with a number. I just tell me everyone who asks that I have lost a lot and that I decided early on not to share specific numbers with anyone.

I know it's hard, but this is much more of a mental change as anything.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
