Protein absorption

Recommended Posts

Kindle posted a response to a topic on Protein that surprised me, about how much Protein we can absorb. That was absolutely the first time I had heard of a limit. I did some googling, and was very surprised. Several sites talked about absorption rates of 8 to 10 grams per hour for whey protein, with a time frame of about an hour and a half before the excess is converted to sugar. Even dense protein, the max I found was 30 grams per meal that could be absorbed. Has anyone looked into this topic mite, that can send me some really good links?

If we can only absorb 15 grams of protein per shake, why are we drinking shakes with 25 - 30 grams at a time? Should we be splitting these shakes to maximize absorption? Why was this never mentioned in my prep classes?

The info I got from my NUT was the body absorbs 30 gms per hour.

However, when I went looking for links after reading your post it appears it's not as simple as that. I googled "how much Protein can the body absorbs at once". I got links for a lot of articles geared towards body building and most of them were trying to sell a product. I scanned a few. One of the things I noticed was that it takes the body longer to break down and absorb Protein in a non liquid state. This makes sense since many surgeons want their patients getting their protein from food as soon as possible.

I think a shake with 25 - 30 gms or even meals that clock in around that much are okay. even if we aren't taking an hour to drink it, if we leave that 30 min eating/drinking room it may be okay. I think it's just one of those things too technical to go into in a nutritional class.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
