jess9395 5,449 Posted December 1, 2015 TRUVIA IS NOT STEVIA! Read the package of TRUVIA and you'll find it is mostly Sucralose and a small part stevia. If you're sensitive to Splenda, then stay away from Truvia and Stevia in the Raw. Real stevia is best as a liquid and does offer some sweetness, but not as much as Sucralose--so big food companies add it in a blend. I should restate myself. Yes Truvia isn't pure stevia leaf... But in the supermarket the boxes labeled Truvia and stevia... Or at the coffee place the packets labeled Truvia or stevia usually contain the same blend unless marked "stevia leaf." Again that's why I said above that it was made FROM stevia leaf not that it was stevia leaf. For practical purposes the labels Truvia and stevia typically contain the same things. Stevia Leaf or Stevia Leaf extract is more pure. Sorry for not staying myself more clearly.
jess9395 5,449 Posted December 1, 2015 I've read that Truvia is a much better choice. Because Splenda is said to do some unhealthy things to your stomach and other bad side effects. I'd research the side effects of Splenda ans do a comparison between the two. What is Splenda supposed to do to your stomach? I haven't seen that research. Can you share? I had heard about effects on blood sugar but not stomach. Would love to be more informed Screenshot_2015-11-30-18-28-55.png Screenshot_2015-11-30-18-30-17.png Screenshot_2015-11-30-18-30-50.png Screenshot_2015-11-30-18-31-50.png Screenshot_2015-11-30-18-32-06.png Screenshot_2015-11-30-18-32-06.png Screenshot_2015-11-30-18-32-35.png Screenshot_2015-11-30-18-32-54.png Screenshot_2015-11-30-18-32-54.png Screenshot_2015-11-30-18-33-11.png Screenshot_2015-11-30-18-33-32.png Sent from my SM-N900V using Tapatalk Thanks! I hadn't read that... I'm gonna look up that Duke study on the alteration of gut bacteria! That's such an intriguing field of study. 500mg/kg seems like a LOT of Sucralose though... Not sure many of us will consume that amount (the amount that showed kidney damage). But still good to be aware of!
Lexuskela 158 Posted December 1, 2015 Oh this just plain out right sucks! This is clearly not towards anyone here...just my frustration. I have no issues with cutting out all bad foods etc to maintain the lifestyle we choose for this surgery & weight loss. Now to say you basically can't even mimic the sweet taste at all, if you do, you are poisoning yourself little by little. I wish I was one of the lucky few who came out of surgery thinking everything was too sweet for me! I wouldn't want friggin splenda in my damn cold brew tea anyway then. This really pisses me off. BLERDgirl 6,417 Posted December 1, 2015 This was the same issue with aspertame/sweet n low. In the 70's they came out with this study showing how it caused cancer in lab rats or something but the truth was it was an outrageously high level that the rats were given. I'm not knocking anyone's choice of sweetener. They all have pros and cons. To the OP, if you like splenda, and your NUT okays it, go for it. My body reacts to most artificial sweetners and stevia. I seem able to tolerate small amounts of sucrolose and Monkfruit, but I don't push it. I find agave & brown rice Syrup too sweet. Raw honey is my sweetener of choice if I am adding it to a beverage. Keep in mind most flavored Protein powders & bars have some variation of a sweetener. Like I said, pick your poison. That's really the best we can do. kelcified 66 Posted December 3, 2015 I have tried every kind of sweetener out there. I prefer natural, primarily honey, but honey does not taste the best in everything. I love the Torani sugar-free syrups (they are made with sucralose - Splenda) in Protein Shakes and coffee. I use Truvia sometimes too. You will get different information from many sources. It comes down to your preference in taste.
