What if I gain in the 6 month pre op?

Recommended Posts

I started going to the doctor monthly for a medication & when I decided on WLS, I figured I could use those months as part of my pre op 6 month requirement since he always spoke to me about my weight. I never was actually weighed during these visits, and I would just tell a weight to the MA who brought me in. I never paid attention in the beginning because I wasn't doing this for surgery at the time. So I had 4 months done before I met with my surgeon. The NP told me I cannot gain weight from then on, which is fine. I can't remember the weights I told the doctor though. Could I be denied for gaining weight during the 6 month pre op diet, if it was before I met with the surgeon? I'm dieting now and will be down weight by the next visit but I'm unsure what my last 4 months look like :(

I'm pretty sure it depends on what the requirements are with your insurance and even with your surgeon. Your insurance may require you to lose a certain amount of weight or to not gain weight or your surgeon may have specific guidelines even if your insurance doesn't. The state employees where I live (with PEIA insurance) have a 12 month waiting period and if they gain one pound during that time, the 12 months starts all over.

it completely depends on your insurance. Every company has different requirements. You should call your insurance company and find out exactly what your pre op requirements would be

Call and ask what weights you've previously advised. If they want a reason, tell them you're creating a progress chart or something and want your numbers.

You just have to be at the same weight or lower than your starting weight. Even if your records show you gained a pound or 2 during your monitored it the beginning and end weight that matter.

I hope I do not get denied I gained 8 lbs during my 6 months :( my thyroid medication has been increased twice since starting this process too? I started my liquid diet already b/c I don't want to be denied or the surgery put off for gaining. I have lost 4 lbs since Friday!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
