I was told by surgeon not to swallow pills whole until 3 months out. When I had one of my post op appointments he said go ahead and try swallowing the capsule that was beyond bitter. I was about 2 months out then. One night I did and got an excruciating pain below chest, radiating to stomach and back, just like a gallbladder attack, except I do not have a gallbladder. It lasted abut 2 hours. spoke with the on call doc, he said sounded like pills got stuck g back to crushing them. I am now almost 4 months out and have been swallowing my pills for about a month. last night, i got that excruciating pain again. This time lasted about an hour. I had not overeaten for Thanksgiving, was very proud of what and how much I ate. Just wondering if anyone else has experienced anything like this, pain, stuck pills, anything. I messaged my doc this AM, but do not even know if they are open today. So for today I am mostly doing liquids and very soft stuff like yogurt and cottage cheese.

When I had my gallbladder out, my surgeon at the time told me it is possible to get stones again after it's gone and the pain would be like a gall bladder pain but less severe. Something about they would take a tube and go down the throat and suck them out. It's been 13+ yrs now so it's hard to remember the exact details, but you might want to talk to your doctor about it.

Thanks guys, I guess I will stick to very small pieces or crushing. I cannot take the chewable Vitamins any longer either, they are so sweet they upset me. The past 2 days I am trying the Vitamin patch, and for the rest I will crush in some liquid or applesauce.

You also could have a structure forming so call your doc who may order you an upper GI. If it's the same pill that does it every time and it never happens with any of the others then see if there is any alternative to that particular pill, formula, or capsule etc.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
