Switching BCBS carriers in the middle of my WLS journey....

Recommended Posts

So I have had some ups and downs switching from a weird program to a better WLS program, met with my Surgeon (initial consult) last Monday... that went well. I have my 4 month diet check up/appt with my nutritionist next week and other than finishing my diet and getting the letter from my PCP, I've met all of the other requirements that my current insurance BCBS of Anthem needs.

What I didn't really think about until today is that my company moved it's headquarters from Phoenix to Dallas this year, thanks silly Airline!.... but in doing so we will be having some small changes in out benefits next year... I will still have the same BCBS PPO 100/80 etc... except, instead of being BCBS of Anthem it is switching to BCBS of Texas. I'm wondering if that will hinder my progress at all?

As it stands now, my 6 month diet will be monitored through February and I'm guessing my Surgery will be in February or March (given everything is turned in and approved by then...).. going by Anthem BCBS requirements.

I can't seem to find any recent information about BCBS of Texas about their coverage for gastric bypass and what their requirements are. I don't know if they also require the 6 month diet or how that plays out. I imagine the requirements are about the same???

I was wondering if anyone might know or have any advice on what BCBS of Texas may require for their approval process for surgery? Everyone seems to be closed today, which makes sense with the Holidays and all. I am just hoping changing from one BCBS carrier to the other (though it's the same plan) won't throw too much of a wrench in my progress at all. This Pseudo-tumor cerebri will literally be the death of me if I can't get this all together soon, I'm definitely tired of being so sick and tired and absolutely sick of lumbar punctures every few weeks..... I know all the ER nurses and doctors on a first name basis, lol!

Any advice would be greatly appreciated! Thank you! :)

I won't have my new ID cards and info until the end of the month and it's going to dive me nuts over the next few weeks if I can't figure all of this out.

If you go to bcbstx.com at the very bottom in small print it has important information it's in there. They do not require nutrition classes. They do require a phsyc evaluation.

Thank you soooo very much, maybe that can speed the process up a few months for me. I truly don't know how much more of this pressure in my skull I can take. Ugh. I am being patient though. Whether it is January, February, or March... I've got ALL of my other requirements done except getting the letter from my PCP and finishing up the last couple of months of my 6 month diet. I'm just really looking forward to moving on to the healing process.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
