Must Haves to Eat at Home After Surgery?

Recommended Posts

Hi guys. So I'm getting sleeved on Monday, 11/30. What are some things you guys stocked up on for the weeks right after surgery? I have Protein Shakes, and Water. What other liquids/food should I have on hand for the first 2 weeks or so? Thanks!

Did your surgeon or dietitian provide you with a list of acceptable foods? Mine says 1-2 days post are Clear liquids (diet crystal light, diet popsicles. They also include sugar free Jello and broth). After that it's smooth yogurt (no fruit or granola), Greek yogurt, skim or 1% milk, nonfat milk powder, low-fat cream Soup (strained) unsweetened applesauce, thinned out cooked Cereal (I'm guessing they mean Cream o'Wheat--not sure how you could thin out oats enough).

After the 1st week, they let you see if you can tolerate a soft cooked egg, non-fat refried Beans, low-fat cottage cheese.

Anyway, I'd check with your dietitian.

I went to BJs and found packs of 24 mixed sugar free Jello and puddings, sugar free Popsicles, chicken broth, and Premier Protein. I also have some yogurt, low fat cottage cheese, and puréed Soups since those are allowed on my pre and post op diet. My surgery is Tuesday, I THINK I'm ready.

Good luck! My surgery was 11/23. I feel ok today, still sore. I'm on full liquids for 2 weeks. Greek yogurt seems to go down best for me. My shakes tasted horrible to me post op. I plan to try them again in a couple days. They also have Greek yogurt frozen treats that have lots of Protein in them. Those and sugarfree Popsicles go down without pain now. Sugarfree pudding has been good too. I think I've had an easier time with thicker liquids than thin.

broth, herbal tea, greek yogurt, At least 2 weeks worth of Protein drinks/powder/shakes. A USB mug warmer to keep things hot while you slowly sip.

My favorite soothing drink was chicken broth with a tiny bit of bouillon and some dried rosemary and thyme. I let it simmer on the stove all day and poured it into my mug through a sieve. Of course, I drank the Protein drinks and stuff, but the broth soothed my tummy and relaxed me.

Add some unflavored Protein Powder and this is perfect. The only way I survived all liquids was having at least one savory item a day. All that sweet drove me nuts.

Immediately after surgery for the first week I had apple juice, Water, and broth. Week two I introduced Protein by putting GENEPRO in sugar free hot chocolate and cream Soups.< /p>

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
