What happens if you drink with a meal?

Recommended Posts

I am in the process - just two more appointments and I'll be ready to go for insurance authorization - and I have read a ton of posts on this website - don't know whether to be afraid or excited! I was just wondering two things:

1. What happens if you drink when eating ?

2. If you don't drink while eating or for 30 minutes before and 1 hour after, how on earth do you get enough fluids?

I'm confused about the whole liquid stage, mushie stage, Protein Shakes, solid food stuff.

Of course, one of the two appointments I have left pre-op is with the nutritionist, so I guess she'll clear up some of it.

Thanks !:nervous

I think the big reason for not drinking is if you don't the food will stay in you little tummy longer and make you feel full longer.

If I drink while I'm eating, it tends to sit right on top of the food and come back up. Plus you will be full longer if you don't wash it through your stomach. I was worried too before surgery, and I hate to sound like everyone else that says "it's the best thing I've ever done".... but it really is. I have to say it was rough for a couple days after surgery, but I would relive it in a heartbeat. I feel better now than I have in years, and I have just lost 30 lbs. I was banded June 4th and it is just now July 23rd.... I started at 244, so that is alot of weight for me to lose in that amount of time... but best of all is how I feel. I do my best to drink a glass of Water before I eat. For instance, when you go to a restaurant, you get your drinks first... I always drink as much as I possibly can before the food arrives. Also, when I work out I get really thirsty, so that helps! Hang in there!

For me - nothing. I do it often, not all the time. I dont down a huge glass of Water but I do sip coffee (breakfast time and lunchtime) or wine (dinner time)with a meal. Doesnt make me hungry sooner, spaces out the bites and helps avoid golfballs from eating too fast etc.

I was never told not to actually. Although in general its also the practice in Australia.
