MamaTo3inNH 100 Posted December 5, 2015 If I was still in an office job I would have taken a month. Maybe 3 weeks...
epiphani 28 Posted December 5, 2015 I took 3 weeks off of work. That was plenty of time in terms of pain management, but rough returning to work just as I was struggling with the transition from liquids to solids. That, for me, was more of a challenge than the surgery itself.
Anxious2beme 93 Posted December 5, 2015 Hi - I had my surgery on 11/3 and was back to work the end of the next week - on 11/12. The first day in the hospital was my worst and after hat it was all uphill. I never experienced fatigue and actually had more energy than I thought possible. I began walking the day I got home and continued to walk every other day and got up to a little over 2 miles. I realize I am very fortunate to have such a fabulous recovery and can only wish the same for you. Good luck!
thbrown223 214 Posted December 5, 2015 I had RNY on 10/12. I'm a special education teacher. I returned to work on 10/20. When I returned I only did a half day for the week due to being fatigued and still recovering. I wasn't in any pain. I wasn't uncomfortable. Definitely uncomplicated recovery. However I did experience a rapid heartbeat the following week. I was able to walk around (slowly) and teach.
TheNewKris 8 Posted December 5, 2015 I am a nurse, and I took 4 weeks off after surgery as I do a lot of heavy lifting and wanted to take more time to be on the safe side. I am going back to work next week, and honestly I think 2 weeks would have been enough for me. I know alot of people have trouble with fatigue after surgery, but I didn't seem to have this problem. I pretty much feel like myself....just without the appetite! But, I think everyone recovers differently and you have to do what is right for your circumstances. nnv 44 Posted December 7, 2015 I am a college professor. I had surgery on Monday, September 21 and was in class on Thursday, September 24th. I only had to teach for a couple of hours though and then had a 3 day weekend and didn't go back to my full/normal schedule until Monday the 28th.
Janie80 2 Posted December 7, 2015 Thank you for all the feedback. I am one week post op and I am planning to return to my Social Work job on Wednesday. I had some discomfort the first few days but I attribute it entirely to the gas. I feel great and will make the transition slow and I am able to catch a breath when needed. Good luck to all in their recovery and thanks again for taking the time to respond.
TMG1980TMG 136 Posted December 14, 2015 I took 6 weeks-- it gave me time to work on getting Protein and fluids in. Getting into a routine!
kellygirl17 3 Posted December 14, 2015 I had surgery last Monday (12/7) and am back to work today (although I will work from home this week, back to the office next week). I have had a week of ups and downs but the downs mostly have been because of the drain I have, terrible gas and then Constipation. I get the drain out this afternoon and the other two problems are better. The combination of anistesia and pain medicine is lethal to the GI system. I am also tired in the afternoons but not such that I can't handle it. If you can take off two full weeks I would suggest you do so - you will feel alot better by that time. By the way - my surgery was a band to bypass revision. Good luck! Kelly
tappingmom 85 Posted December 14, 2015 I am 3 days out and had planned on taking three weeks. I just got a call from my short term disability person and she said I'm approved for 6 weeks. Guess I'll just see how things go.
psvzum 81 Posted December 14, 2015 It's really different for everyone. I just had surgery 12/2/15. The first week I was really tired-even after getting off pain meds. The surgery pain was minimal. I have my post op visit tomorrow and will get my back to work letter then. I will say, I overdid it today picking up gifts and wrapping them. You need to take it easy if your home or at work. GOod luck
