Nauseous 24 hours a day. Is this normal?

Recommended Posts

I had my band to sleeve revision surgery on Friday, November 20th and have been nauseous ever since then. Water tastes like sewage and the Protein shakes taste fine, but every sip still causes me to feel sick. I take the anti-nausea pills, but they aren't helping much.

Is it normal to feel constant nausea 5 days after surgery? If so, when does it normally subside?

It's not unusual, but it's not typical. If the nausea meds you are taking aren't working after day 7, call the doctor back. You may need a different or stronger med.

Thanks. I think I will go ahead and give my doc a call to see what he as to say (since he might not be in the office the next 2 days due to Thanksgiving).

Anyone else experienced constant nausea after the sleeve surgery?

Not sure if this will help but I had a terrible time with nausea after my bypass. I was taking Zofran for nausea and Dr told me that if you are dehydrated (or just not drinking enough) Zofran won't work. Sort of a vicious cycle. So see if you can find anything other than Water to drink and then take the med. Powerade Zero, Propel Fitness water (I like the berry flavor), even just some broth, etc.

Thanks for that advice. I am having a difficult time getting my liquids and Protein in each day, so I will try harder to see if that helps. Thank you!

@@Daisee68 has a god idea, maybe try a Protein or Vitamin Water. Sometimes the clear drink are easier to tolerate. Maybe pick up one bottle of Isopure No Carb and try it.

I actually put Crystal Light in my Water and that makes it tolerable and then I drink either Premier Protein chocolate or powders?utm_source=BariatricPal&utm_medium=Affiliate&utm_campaign=CommentLink" target="_ad" data-id="1" >unjury chocolate Splendor. I can tolerate those, but they still make me nauseous. Plain Water is an absolute NO NO for me as it tastes like sewage.

My surgeon just called me from his home and told me it is normal, but is going to call me in another anti-nausea medicine and that I should be taking it every 4 hours around the clock for 1 -2 weeks after surgery.

@@Fatty McFatster - I am SO glad your dr called back! I hope the new med will help! By the way, my favorite additive to Water was the Orange Crush powder stick (by the Crystal Light). I mix it in 32 oz of Water instead of 16 oz as called for because I don't like it so sweet. It really helped me get the water down.

I had a horrible time with nausea for weeks. I also had a hard time with Protein shakes, liquids in general, getting in Protein, and eating! Lol. I'm currently in week 5. Some things I've learned:

Explore the shakes. Go slowly when trying new protein to find one that works. Try diluting with Water or skim milk if you need to. It took me ages to find a protein that did not make me run to throw up with just a sip (Core Power banana strawberry flavor!).

Dehydration will cause nausea. But sometimes it's hard to get the fluids in when you're sick! I had to set up a cycle, because my normal fluids, I no longer liked. I switched to 20 oz of ice Water with cut up orange for flavor. 20 of Decaf unsweet tea, and 10 or so of Fair Life milk (high protein) - bc I no longer could tolerate my normal water with Dasani or Crystal Lite drops. That was my first step in increasing fluids.

Eating too fast or not chewing well enough, or in taking too much (because we do not feel fullness the same) really intensifies the nausea.

Good luck!!

Thanks so much for the information. I'm going to take your advice to see if I can get rid of this nausea.

Thankfully my constant nausea went away about 1 week after surgery.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Your so close now! It's gonna be great :) Wishing you a speedy recovery and looking forward to seeing how it goes!

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Am feeling this right now. My surgery date is 4/1. Sign the consent tomorrow. I feel like I overloaded myself with too much info, too many opinions. Got to the point where I was wondering if I should do this. Then I thought of my reasons for taking this step and that settled my nerves. Still get moments of doubt but am striving forward. Am just going to follow my book from the surgeon. Joined this because I was told by my dietician that I should do this for support
