Hospital Stay Day or Days?

Recommended Posts

Hello everyone! I am scheduled for Monday, 11/30 for surgery. How long has everyone stayed overnight in the hospital? Everyone says 1 day unless something happens but my friend went in & they told her mandatory 3 days!! Not looking forward to that since I have a 14 month old!

Usually 1 night but now more places are moving toward outpatient and so some go home same day. The surgery is not that bad at all.

I was overnight, but I think it depends on doctor and how well you do post-op (drinking/walking/able to urinate) etc.

Oh thank god I have hope! Lol. I am pretty sure that medical history has a lot to do w/it. My friend has a long list & I just have a c-section, but she said they told her the moment she checked in it was 3days. Hoping its 1! Thank you all!

The hospital doesn't control how long you stay, that's up to your surgeon. And it depends on what your surgeon's criteria for discharge. If you are concerned, speak to her/him about it

My clinic told me 3-4 nights (one of the reasons I chose them actually, I know of people have less, but I didn't want to feel like I was being pushed out of the door as I'm in a different country) plus a couple of days in a hotel after. It does vary a lot though, on your surgeon/clinic and on how you yourself respond to the procedure.

I had my surgery 10/29/15 and went home the next day. My surgeon wanted me to stay and extra night, but because I was doing so well let me go early. It really depends on you the patient and your surgeon. My suggestion, is do what makes you comfortable. Have a plan!

My hospital stay was also pre-determined by insurance. They wanted to make CERTAIN that I had progressed past the Clear liquids on to full liquids before considering dismissal. (I truly appreciate that, seeing how as I "could've been sent home too early", only to have something go wrong, requiring me to return)

Looking back, I'm glad that the 2 day stay was required--I came home confident in regards to fluids & was "reading my body's signals" pretty well when discharged.

Best of luck to you!

Mine was at a surgical center, most go home same day. I stayed one night as I had severe sleep apnea.

Although my insurance pre-approved five days, I was in on Monday morning and out on Wednesday afternoon.

I have a two night stay. Surgery is Tuesday morning and I'll be discharged Thursday. I'm okay with that because I live alone and don't have family close by. The hospital has wifi so I'll just bring my ipad and headphones and hang out in my comfy pants watching Netflix until they set me free :)

When is your surgery? & I am sorry that no one is close to help you :( but live up the 24/7 service lol

My surgeon said that I would be going home the same day as my surgery. I asked him to keep me overnight as my surgery was at a hospital that was over 1.5 hours away and my wife was not comfortable driving in the area. He said that it was no problem. We stayed overnight and was dismissed the next day. Fortunately I have had an exceptional post-op experience.

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

The 14th was my day. I am home and recovery is going pretty smooth. They even let me walk out of the hospital. Picture of me in recovery curtesy of my boyfriend lol.

Neat you have a pic of this day! I was sooo happy to get my surgery. It was well worth it! And I'm not even near my goal. I had surgery Dec. 2!
