Hungry like feeling since surgery- 6 weeks out.

Recommended Posts

I am hungry... I guess.. It's the only way I can describe it.

The kind of burning, grumbling, somewhat nauseated feeling i got when i was super hungry before surgery. It goes away when I eat and for 30 minutes after. Drinking doesn't help it. I take omeprazole daily and have tried eating tums to ease the tummy- nothing! It is NOT cravings or head hunger. I'm getting worried that I will have a constant upset stomach for the rest of my life.

Does anyone else feel this way or have tried anything that helps?

@@bariatricwife - Tums won't cut it. What dosage of omeprazole are you taking? You may need to adjust it or increase it. Some people take 20 mgs 2x's day. For me it helped to take 40 mgs 2 -3 hours prior to dinner. I only seemed to have issues in the evening. Others take an AM dosage before Breakfast and then an evening/afternoon dosage.

I take 40 mg at night because I was having night GERD issues that have since resolved. I starting taking Zantac 150 mg in am and omeprazole at night. Doesn't seem to do it so far. I guess time will tell. This surgery is like a baby.. Goes through its phases!!

I take 20mg. of omeprazole in the morning, but it doesn't stop my stomach noises. The other day it sounded like my tummy was humming a tune. I wasn't hungry or anything. At least I didn't think I was hungry. These days hunger is not something I really notice or recognize.

I take 40 mg of omeprazole in the morning and I get a little bit hungry before lunch (about 11am) and VERY hungry in the afternoons (like right now at 2:18pm - grrrrr). I don't want to increase the dose or take it more often as it costs a lot of money. I'm learning to accept the feelings in my stomach and know that I don't need more food, just to get busy at work and forget about it. It's not an emergency. It's just my stomach.

AS SAID ABOVE, ACID REDUCERS ARE USUALLY THE KEY

I have developed a nasty case of GERD due to gastric band revision related complications and I get that feeling on occasion. It happens too close after meals so I know that it's just acid rising into my esophagus.

My solution is to take Nexium 20 mg once in the morning and evening. Secondly, when I feel that way, I get a mug of hot Water, throw in a slice of lemon and drink it. It makes me feel instantly better.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
