courtnojudge90 7 Posted November 23, 2015 Guys, Is there anything I should know about working out after I get the sleeve? Like will I still be able to lift and gain muscle the same? Will I be able to push my self? Also, I love playing basketball, is there a possibility of still playing once I get cleared by the DR's and everything? magtart 603 Posted November 23, 2015 You should have no problem doing any sport or exercise you did prior to surgery once you are completely healed and cleared by your doc.
dlappjr 467 Posted November 23, 2015 Once you get the all clear from the dr, you should be good to go. I got my all clear around 4 weeks. This weekend I had some Snacks, so I hit the gym like:
SleeveSoon 191 Posted November 24, 2015 I am almost 3 months post-op (sleeve) and have been surprised with the lack of specific information about exercise after this type of surgery. My surgeon said that I could/should do cardio (except swimming) immediately after surgery, but not to lift anything heavier than 10 pounds for 4 weeks. After 4 weeks he cleared me for all types of exercise and recommended a "medical integration" program offered by the gym affiliated with the hospital. The trainers from the medical integration program set up a program for me (including weights) that I have been following for the past 7 weeks. The program ends this week and they will compare where I am now (weight, fitness level, measurements (neck, thighs, chest), and strength) with my assessment results from two months ago. You will for sure be able to play basketball again (probably 4 weeks after surgery). You will be able to lift weights again, but the amount of Protein and calories you consume will impact muscle gain. I am currently consuming around 120 grams of Protein and 1,200 calories per day, lift weights 3 times per week, and am probably just maintaining muscle (while losing fat). Similar here. between 100-120g protein daily. Cardio daily, weights 3 days per week. Also not really building muscle, but I am trying to keep as much of my muscle as possible while burning fat. I have read that it is pretty hard to build muscle while in the initial losing phase, basically the first 8-12 months. Since you are losing weight and already have to work hard to get enough protein and fluids and calories, the best you can hope for is to not lose too much muscle. I believe once you hit maintenance, you can probably start to build muscle again. I think once you are cleared to lift more than 10lbs, you will probably be safe to lift weights, but you may want to start off easy. The surgeon can give you a better idea, but my surgeon was also quite vague about it. All he would say is I am clear to workout however I saw fit.
