Normal to be scared?

Recommended Posts

Hi!! My name is Rhonda and I'm 49 years old. I just started the process a couple weeks ago. I'm finding that I can't sleep very well because all I think about is the surgery. I'm really excited and wondering if I'm doing the right thing. I'm miserable now!! My husband always says to me that the surgery is so drastic. Then I get scared. Help!!

I started the process in August. My last appointment with the doctor is Nov 30! It is all I think about right now. I wonder the same thing especially when my husband keeps telling me he does not want me to have the surgery. He says it is not normal to just have surgery when you do not need it. But I need it! I am getting nowhere on my own. I need that reset tool to get my life back. Tonight at dinner we were talking about it again. My son said I might die - I said to him I could have a heart attack ( terrible family Cardiac history) or a stroke. I have high bp, high cholesterol, high triglycerides and diabetes. I can die from all that so I would rather try to get healthier. I know how you feel. And u think if we were not scared we would not be taking it seriously.

@@Angelsoul219 I think it's normal to be scared. I was. if you don't have faith in your medical team then use should be worried. I had faith in them and had no issues or regrets.

I'm 44, I'm nervous too! I am divorced but my mom is not really on board with surgery. I love her but I have to do what is right for me. I don't feel free to express my fears. Because this kind of step is drastic. But I hAve tried for 36 years to lose the weight and keep it off by every method possible. This is the tool I want to get for myself so that in the long run I will be healthy! I just keep reminding myself that just because I feel a little uneasy, my choice is not a bad one. Good luck with your family!

It is normal to be nervous before any medical procedure or surgery. Losing sleep early on in the process is a little concerning. You don't want it to progress into full blown anxiety. Just be aware of it and if need be enlist the help of a therapist.

I agree with other posts, that it is normal to be scared..Largely, because this procedure is irreversible...it is permanent...

But that is exactly what I wanted and needed....I was tired of temporary results, and successes that were short lived...I wanted the COMPLETE control and ownership that the VSG gives people...THIS is my tool...this is MY change...and the results are going to be amazing.

See? It is all a matter of perspective...

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
